Love it or not, but the SEC probably has the craziest, diehard collegiate sports fans in the country. The loyalty carries through to daily life, including rooting for guys at the PGA Championship. Keegan Bradley was an innocent bystander having gone to St. John?s, but the Atlanta crowd had some strong feelings for Auburn product Jason Dufner ? one way or the other.
After coming in second in the year?s final major, though, Dufner was invited to his alma mater to experience a practice for the BCS national champions in person.
?Probably the most exciting thing that happened to me [on Monday] was I?ve been close with some of the football coaches at Auburn, and they called me up to come up to the football complex. They had a day off yesterday, and I walked into one of the auditoriums and the whole team was in there, and they gave me a standing ovation. So that?s pretty cool,? he said Tuesday at the Wyndham Championship.
Dufner felt honored that guys would take time out of their preparation for the nearing season to watch him play for the Wanamaker.
?For them to take time out from their training to get ready for the season coming up in a couple weeks and to hear them talk about, oh, I was watching, and guys you wouldn?t expect to be watching ? you wouldn?t expect a 320-pound defensive lineman to be watching golf on Sunday, but they were,? he said.
To have the football?s program eyes on him as an alum Dufner says was flattering to learn.
?[The coaches were] saying we were checking text messages, watching when we could, that was a pretty neat experience for me.?
