PacketVideo filed suit in the Netherlands and San Diego district court after attempts to broker a licensing deal with Spotify were unsuccessful, PacketVideo said. ?PacketVideo has a strong intellectual property portfolio, and will take any necessary action needed to protect its intellectual property and prevent the misuse of its patents,? Joel Espelien, general counsel for PacketVideo, said in a statement.
The suit covers one U.S. patent and one European patent, both of which ?enables Spotify?s cloud-based music service,? PacketVideo said. Both patents were originally filed in the mid-1990s and were acquired by PacketVideo when it bought Switzerland-based SDC AG in 2007. The U.S. patent covers a ?device for the distribution of music in digital form? and was issued in 1997.

U.K. police arrest top member of LulzSec, or did they? (Yahoo! News)
Scotland Yard may have nabbed a top hacker, or they may be back to square one
Yesterday,?law enforcement agents from Scotland Yard took down who they believe is a key member of hacker collective?LulzSec. The 19-year-old Scot now in police custody is thought to be a LulzSec frontman who goes by the online handle "Topiary." Topiary was allegedly involved in the clan's hacking of embattled financial firm HBGary and is said to have provided funding to allow LulzSec to continue its hacking exploits. He has even granted face-to-face interviews with news organizations, which is rare for any member of the reclusive group to agree to.
So, when the U.K. police force announced they had nabbed Topiary, it seemed like the result of good online detective work. That is, until anti-LulzSec hackers began poking around in chat logs and email strings, where it was revealed that the cops might have collared the wrong crook. It seems that the 19-year-old that has taken the fall might be a?different Topiary.
Recently revealed?chat transcripts seem to point to a bit of a mixup in Scotland Yard's prime target, and the?real Topiary may be safely at home in Sweden. In a lengthy chat conversation between Topiary and an unnamed individual, the hacker headman repeatedly wishes that government officials would nab the U.K. hacker with the same name. If the logs are legit, it seems that Scotland Yard might have a bit more egg on its face, and after being implicated in the?News of the World phone hacking scandal, they need all the good press they can get.

One of those new releases that caught my eye was Vera Brosgol's debut graphic novel - Anya's Ghost.
One of the qualities in a graphic novel that appeals to me is the creator's ability to deal with elements of real life in a way that will connect with readers.? Brosgol's first book does exactly this.? Her debut deals with themes familiar to most teens - fitting in, crushes, family relationships & expectations, friendship, decisions & consequences, and also how all this is made more complicated by being an immigrant. However, Brosgol doesn't stop there.? The real twist comes with the introduction of a century old ghost who is more than eager and willing to be Anya's BFF. ?
Another aspect of the book that made the story work for me was that Anya truly grows as a character.? Through her experiences and interactions with her new friend, Anya comes to learn more about herself, those around her and what is important in life.? This can be tricky in a YA story.? How do you talk about things like being responsible or making hard decisions without coming across as preachy?? Brosgol manages to do it with humor, and sincerity. ?
I also loved Brosgol's illustrative style.? Here is where I struggle....I lack all the right words to best describe how the simple color scheme used throughout the book fits the mood and theme or how the art is engaging and fun.? I am sure that there is a way to do this but unfortunately, I seem to lack the right words.? Maybe the best way to share about Brosgol's style is to share with you the official book trailer.

Self Confidence | The Pro's Corner - Everything Figure Skating
When athletes feel confident, they are more readily able to turn sporting potential into superior performance. Conversely, when they feel unsure of themselves, the slightest setback or smallest hurdle can have an inordinate effect on their performance. In this article we explore the nature of self-confidence and present a theory underlying the causes of self-confidence in sport.
What is self-confidence?
For many athletes, an explanation of the concept of self-confidence is hardly necessary as they know intuitively what it is. Indeed, self-confidence is so palpable in some athletes you can almost reach out and touch it. Their confidence is reflected in everything they say and do, in what they wear and how they look.
Self-confidence is commonly defined as the sureness of feeling that you are equal to the task at hand. This sureness is characterised by absolute belief in ability. You may well know someone whose self-belief has this unshakeable quality, whose ego resists even the biggest setbacks. In such people, confidence is as resilient as a squash ball: the harder the blow, the quicker they bounce back. Nonetheless, although confidence is a desirable characteristic, arrogance ? or a sureness of feeling not well founded in one?s ability ? is undesirable. If self-confidence is perhaps the ?guardian angel of sports performers? then arrogance is their nemesis.
Confidence is related to personality and those who exude self-confidence across a range of contexts, say at work, socially and in their sport, are said to be high in trait confidence. However, confidence can also be very specific ? to a particular situation or with reference to a set of circumstances ? in which case it is known as state confidence or self-efficacy.
For example, a professional football player may give off vibes suggesting they are high in trait confidence; however, when they are faced with the prospect of saving their team in a penalty shoot-out at a major championship, their state confidence can plummet and this has the potential to wreak havoc on their performance. This is precisely what happened to David Beckham when England faced Portugal in the quarter finals of the European Football Championships in June 2004. In the throws of a nail-biting penalty shoot-out, he lost focus and hoofed the ball over the crossbar.
The six sources of self-confidence
The confidence an individual feels during a particular activity or situation is generally derived from one or more of the following six elements:
1. Performance accomplishments are the strongest contributor to sport confidence. When you perform any skill successfully, you will generate confidence and be willing to attempt something slightly more difficult. Skill learning should be organised into a series of tasks that progress gradually and allow you to master each step before progressing on to the next. Personal success breeds confidence, while repeated personal failure diminishes it.
2. Being involved with the success of others can also significantly bolster your confidence, especially if you believe that the performer you are involved with (e.g. a team-mate) closely matches your own qualities or abilities. In effect, it evokes the reaction: ?if they can do it, I can do it?.
3. Verbal persuasion is a means of attempting to change the attitudes and behaviour of those around us, and this includes changing their self-confidence. In sport, coaches often try to boost confidence by convincing athletes that the challenge ahead is within their capabilities: ?I know you are a great player so keep your head up and play hard?. An athlete might reinforce this by repeating the message over and over to him or herself as a form of self-persuasion. A tip here is to avoid stating what you want in the negative; so, rather than ??I really don?t want to come off second best? try ?I really want to win this one?. Accordingly, your mind will not need to consider what is not required in order to arrive at what is.
4. Imagery experiences have to do with athletes recreating multi-sensory images of successful performance in their mind. Through creating such mental representations, mastery of a particular task or set of circumstances is far more likely. What you see is what you get
5. Physiological states can reduce feelings of confidence through phenomena such as muscular tension, palpitations and butterflies in the stomach. The bodily sensations associated with competition need to be perceived as being facilitative to performance and this can be achieved through the application of appropriate stress management interventions such as the ?five breath technique? and ?thought-stopping?.
6. Emotional states is the final source of self-confidence and relates to how you control the emotions associated with competition, such as excitement and anxiety. Very often, the importance of the occasion creates self-doubt, which is why it is essential to control your thoughts and emotions. Learning imagery and concentration skills such as those described in ?the spotlight of excellence? (Exercise 2 below) will help.
Research into self-confidence
It is patent to the vast majority of athletes that self-confidence enhances performance. A large number of studies have shown that higher levels of self-confidence are associated with superior performance. In one recent review, the average correlation reported between self-confidence and performance across 24 studies was 0.54, which indicates a moderately strong relationship. Even under strict laboratory conditions, it has been demonstrated many times over that when confidence is manipulated either up or down, there is a significant effect on sports performance.
Very recently, research has shown that social support, such as that which comes from a coach or team-mates, can buffer the effects of competitive stress on self-confidence. Social support also has a direct effect in enhancing athletes? self-confidence. Further, exposing athletes to mental training programs from an early age is likely to have a very positive effect on their levels of self-confidence, which may carry into their adult sporting careers.
In terms of specific self-confidence interventions, it appears that motivational self-talk has a more positive effect on self-confidence than instructional self-talk. That is, self-talk related to inspiring the athlete such as ?Come on, you can do it!? or ?I am just so up for this one? rather than self-talk relating to key foci such as ?keep your eye on the ball?. Another study examined the impact of hypnosis, technique refinement and self-modeling (through a videotape) on the self-confidence of a cricket bowler. As expected, results indicated significant long-term improvement in self-efficacy and bowling performance following intervention.
In a further recent study, it was shown that high self-confidence could reduce the intensity or strength of anxiety symptoms, and influence whether they were interpreted as facilitative or debilitative to performance. Essentially, self-confident athletes interpreted their anxiety symptoms as being part and parcel of the competitive experience. In a related study, it was shown that both the intensity and interpretation of self-confidence were strong predictors of golf putting performance.
Four exercises that will boost your self-confidence
Exercise 1: Confident situations and situations of doubt
To achieve a greater sense of stability in your confidence, it is necessary to know exactly what causes it to fluctuate. Divide a clean page into two columns. Label the first column ?High-confidence situations? and the second ?Low-confidence situations?.
In the first column, list all of the situations or circumstances in your sport in which you feel completely confident. In the second column, list the situations or circumstances that sometimes cause your confidence to diminish. Clearly identifying the situations that make you feel uneasy is the first step towards building greater self-confidence. We will come back to these lists in some of the remaining exercises, but for now, it should have just served to increase your awareness of areas that can be improved.
Exercise 2: The spotlight of excellence
This visualisation exercise recreates the mental state associated with past performance success and will help you in bridging the gap between your ability and confidence:
Imagine a huge spotlight beaming down on the floor one metre in front of you. The light beam is about a metre in diameter.
Now think back to a time in your sporting career when you were performing at the very peak of your ability ? perhaps using the first column from Exercise 1 to guide you. Each movement you made brought about a successful outcome and everything just seemed to flow without much conscious effort
In a dissociated state (i.e. looking at yourself from the outside) examine each of your five senses. See yourself inside the circle and excelling. Imagine exactly what the ?you? inside the circle is seeing, hearing, feeling, and smelling. Notice the ?taste of success? in your mouth
Now step into the spotlight and become fully associated so that you are experiencing events through your own eyes and in real time. Again, notice what you are seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling and tasting.
Notice exactly what this feels like so that you can reproduce it at will whenever your confidence is waning.
Exercise 3: Positive self-talk
Positive self-talk will affirm to you that you possess the skills, abilities, positive attitudes and beliefs that are the building blocks of success. The statements you choose need to be vivid, should roll off the tongue, and be practiced well in advance of competition. Most of all, they must be totally believable. You should use these particularly in the low-confidence situations that you identified in the second column of Exercise 1. Here are some examples to help you in composing your own:
Boxer ? I have fists of steel
Basketball player (for free throws) ? It is just me and the basket
Defensive linesman in American football ? No one is going to get through
Hammer thrower ? I am the king of the stingers
Judo player ? I am as strong as an ox
Ski-jumper ? My timing is always spot on
Sprinter ? Go on the B of the bang
Striker in soccer ? I will slot in every chance
Make your own list of four or five positive self-statements and read them to yourself every night before you go to bed and every morning as you wake up. Through repeated use, they will become embedded in your subconscious and have a profound influence on your sporting performance.
Exercise 4: Using the power of sound
Music has unique properties, among which is its ability to inspire, motivate and boost one?s confidence. There are many tunes with inspirational lyrics or strong extra-musical associations that you can use to increase your confidence before competition. Good examples include I Believe I Can Fly by R Kelly (62bpm), The Best by Tina Turner (104bpm) and Gold by Spandau Ballet (143bpm). You may like to try playing some tracks on your mp3 player as part of a pre-event routine. I suggest that if you want to feel confident and keep your physiological arousal low, select tracks with a slow tempo (i.e. below 110bpm). Conversely, if you want to psych-up, go for a higher tempo (i.e. over 110bpm), and build-up to a tempo of over 150bpm just before competing.
Summary
This article should have convinced you that self-confidence is not solely in the hands of fate. Even when Lady Luck is not shining, you are the person responsible for determining how confident you feel in a sporting encounter. Ideas for promoting confidence range from the simple principles of understanding what causes confidence to wane, to the techniques of visualisation and positive self-talk. You have also learned how to adopt a ?can-do? attitude, exploit weaknesses in your opponents and use inspirational music to raise your game. Wind Power In Denmark: 'Changing Planet' Episode On The Weather ...
In the race to find innovative ways to implement clean and renewable energy, countries may want to keep an eye on Denmark. A new segment from "Changing Planet" reveals how the country leads the world in wind power.
According to a new, green episode of "Changing Planet" on The Weather Channel, 20 percent of Denmark's electricity is generated by the 5,500 wind turbines that have been built off-shore and on land across the country. Danish officials hope to increase wind's share of the country's electricity to 50 percent in the coming decades.
The Danish economy has grown by 80 percent in the past several decades, while its carbon emissions have remained constant, according to TreeHugger. Denmark's wind turbine industry currently employs over 20,000 people, and 90 percent of Danish wind turbines are exported. As an NBC news anchor says in the video clip, "What the Danes have done is transform an age-old idea and become world leaders in wind power."
Wind energy may offer both environmental and economic benefits to the United States as well. In 2010, the U.S. placed third for its economic investments in clean energy, according to The Pew Charitable Trusts. Plans have been approved for the first offshore wind farm in the U.S., with construction set to begin this fall. The Cape Wind project will place 130 turbines in Nantucket Sound off the coast of Massachusetts. The project's officials claim that Cape Wind will create up to 1,000 jobs in the area, and similar investments nationwide could create tens of thousands of jobs.
Despite wind power's promise of clean and renewable energy, critics cite many drawbacks. Opponents of a new wind farm in Maryland explain that both too little and too much wind can be crippling for wind farms. Additionally, current wind turbine technology does not allow for electricity storage on a large scale, creating the need for alternative, and often fossil fuel-based, backup systems when there is no wind. Other groups, such as some Ontario, Canada residents, have claimed that living in close proximity to wind turbines may cause health problems. However, it can be argued that these concerns are a small price to pay for a cleaner form of energy.

Skateboarding - The Evolution of a Modern Phenomenon - Artipot
Five decades since skateboards first appeared on the side walks of the Californian surf coast, skateboarding has transformed itself into a phenomenon among the youth and has cut its own slice of the cult status. In Del Mar, California a young team displayed their brilliant skills on what skateboarding could be, in a freestyle contest at the Ocean Festival, which opened the eyes of the viewers and the organizers to the potential of this exciting new sport.
As skateboarding is a free style sport, and the skills at mastering the board can go as far as one's imagination can soar, it rapidly spread and gained popularity among the American surfing crowd. The hobby provided value for those who were looking for something new to peg their rebellious image onto. Soon the skateboarders developed an image and culture of their own. From then on there was no looking back for a sport that has taken artistic form today. The 80's brought new skateboard deck designs and urethane skate wheels emerging within the industry. Skateboard shops and manufactures began to enter the business world. Enthusiasts started to skate where ever else they could find space - foot paths, parks, roads, and all over the place. Skateboarding began to grow into the shape of an underground movement before the government answered by building skate parks which started to crop up here and there. Films like Video Days further boosted the rebellious skateboarding image as being recklessly sporty. In spite of all that the sport has evolved to a very refined professional level and has a huge following with fans all over the world. Though the association of the skateboarder with rebelliousness and non-conformation has not altogether faded in the memory of the senior citizens, the younger crowd looks at it in a totally different light perhaps due to its extreme sport image and the air time it enjoys in international sports channel. Tony hawk, Steve Caballero, Eric Koston, Lance Mountain, Rodney Mullen and Christian Hosoi are some of the skateboarding legends who took the sport to a higher plain. That unknown 'he-who-invented-the-sport' is never remembered or thanked for but there is always a sense of gratitude and inspiration in the way the sport has evolved and attained popularity today.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? McDonald's Corp (MCD.N) reported a higher-than-expected quarterly profit on Friday as low prices brought in strong sales in Europe and the United States. The company's share price rose 3.1 percent.
June sales at restaurants open at least 13 months were far stronger than analysts expected. During the month, same-restaurant sales were up 6.9 percent in the United States, 9.1 percent in Europe and 4.8 percent in the Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa unit.
Analysts were expecting June same-restaurant sales to rise 2 percent in the United States, 3 percent in Europe and 2 percent in the Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa unit.
Europe is McDonald's largest market for sales, contributing about 40 percent of revenue. The United States is a close second.
"It's the consistency of the everyday value message that has helped them a lot," said Lazard Capital Markets analyst Matthew DiFrisco, who added that McDonald's is good at adjusting its marketing to keep customers coming in.
McDonald's has been taking market share from its fast food peers for many months. It has benefited from improving food quality, adding Dollar Menu items and introducing high-margin beverages such as coffee and fruit smoothies to broaden its appeal beyond the young men who account for the biggest share of sales at most other fast-food chains.
It is also renovating restaurants in Europe and the United States.
Europe's top performers were France, Britain and Russia.
"Broadly speaking, there was just a little bit of a lift in people's willingness to spend in Europe," said Bernstein Research analyst Sara Senatore.
McDonald's global same-restaurant sales rose 5.6 percent in the second quarter. It forecast July results that are up 4 percent to 5 percent overall.
Janney Capital Markets analyst Mark Kalinowski, who correctly signaled that the June U.S. result would be significantly above what many analysts were targeting, said some key competitors are floundering.
In particular, he said, Carrols Restaurant Group (TAST.O) -- one of privately held Burger King's biggest franchisees -- saw same-restaurant sales at its Burger King (BKCBK.UL) restaurants fell 3.6 percent in the second quarter.
Rival Yum Brands Inc (YUM.N) recently reported another quarter of strong earnings based on growth in China, but its U.S. Taco Bell business is hurting from a dismissed lawsuit over the quality of its ground beef.
Shares in Yum, also the parent of the KFC and Pizza Hut chains, were up 0.4 percent. Stock in burger chain Wendy's (WEN.N) was up 1.3 percent.
Shares of McDonald's, which has 32,000 restaurants, were up $2.69 to $89.22 on the New York Stock Exchange in the middle of the trading day. The shares closed at an all-time high of $86.54 on Thursday.
HOLDING THE LINE ON PRICES?
Second-quarter net income rose 15 percent to $1.41 billion, or $1.35 per share, topping the average analyst forecast of $1.28 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Foreign currency translation boosted earnings by 10 cents per share in the second quarter.
Revenue rose to $6.91 billion from $5.95 billion.
Analysts said the strong results showed that McDonald's has pricing power.
"We will continue to consider future price increases," McDonald's Chief Financial Officer Peter Bensen said on a conference call with analysts.
McDonald's has raised prices on some premium products to help offset higher food costs. The company still expects those costs to rise 4 percent to 4.5 percent in the United States and Europe this year.
McDonald's wants customers to keep coming through its doors, so Bensen said it would be "judicious" with additional price hikes.
"You can bet their competitors wish they would take pricing," said Victory Capital Management analyst Dave Kolpak. "You can't do it if McDonald's doesn't. They're putting the heat on the competition."
