Lau Ching-Wan, supersleuth, The Bullet Vanishes

The Bullet Vanishes, which opens this week in San Francisco and other select North American cities, is China Lion?s latest almost-day-and-date release of new Chinese-language product. Part CSI, part Guy Madden Sherlock Holmes, and part Detective Dee, the movie is a classy production set in 1930s China with a lot of really nice vintage pistols. More importantly, it?s a chance to see the great Lau Ching-Wan in action, as he meticulously creates yet another intriguing character.

The story involves the investigation of a series of murders at a Shanghai bullet factory. After one of the factory workers kills herself under suspicious circumstances, several of her co-workers follow in like fashion, dying of gunshot wounds with seemingly spectral bullets. Police detectives Song (LCW) and Guo (Nicholas Tse) are assigned to figure out what?s going on, but as they delve deeper into the case they encounter more and more contradictions.

As a representative of the big-budget cinematic product currently coming out of China, the movie looks great, with its wool-and-tweed period wardrobe, thirties-throwback art direction, and expensive-looking sepia-toned cinematography. Director Lo Chi-leung keeps things moving along despite several abrupt U-turns in the plot, the action choreography includes several nice shootouts, and the movie has fun gently ribbing the primitive forensics of the 1930s detectives. The general air of respectability, however, means that the movie lacks the OTT insanity that drove so many great Hong Kong films?as a China/HK co-production the movie is more genteel than balls-to-the-wall. There?s also a very slight critique of capitalism in the film?s rendering of the evil boss who ruthlessly oppresses the workers, but Hong Kong director Lo doesn?t let it gets in the way of the real fun.

As noted extensively elsewhere, Lau Ching-Wan played a similar character in the much weirder Johnny To movie, The Mad Detective, and some of that movie?s tropes are repeated here, such as Lau?s detective character re-enacting crime scenes in order to deduce their mechanics (though without the psychic link that made the To film so kicky and fun). The Bullet Vanishes also recalls Peter Chan?s recent flick Wu Xia (or Dragon, depending on when and where you saw it), which featured Takeshi Kaneshiro as a hyper-observant detective who could suss out crimes just by brushing his hands over a tabletop. Here Nic Tse and Lau Ching-Wan split the super-detective duties, with Nic also being an expert shootist who wins several quick-draws with the bad guys.

Contemplating evidence, The Bullet Vanishes

Director Lo Chi-leung keeps the twisty plot moving along pretty briskly, as the storyline doubles back on itself to reveal more and more complexity, but the narrative manages to remain pretty clear despite the excessive mendacity of the various characters. Lau carries the movie with his sad beagle eyes and off-kilter physicality, while Nic Tse underplays a bit too much. Jing Boran is cute and winsome as the new kid on the block, and various villians snarl and twich appropriately.

The movie also includes an unlikely female doctor character who is anachronistic but fun and who is a good counterbalance to Mini Yang Mi?s insipid fortune-teller/love interest. Yang Mi is not very scintillating and the romantic subplot/detour is annoying and unconvincing. She?s a performer who continues to not impress me (though I haven?t yet seen Painted Skin 2 so I?ll cut her some slack).

The Bullet Vanishes isn?t the deepest movie in the world but all the money seems to be up on the screen and everything hangs together fairly well. All in all there are much worse ways to spend a couple hours than watching Lau Ching-Wan do his thing on screen in an expensive commercial production. If this is a result of the current Chinese film industry boom, then I?m all for it.

Custom Energy Efficiency: Data Centers

A data center has a massive demand for electricity to run all of its servers 24/7/365. A typical data center uses the same amount of electricity to run the servers as it does to run the air conditioning to keep those servers cool enough to function.

If left to their own devices, servers would overheat and fail very quickly, so a huge amount of air conditioning is required to maintain their operating temperature.

Small data centers

Small data centers tend to supply cooling with packaged DX air conditioners, also called CRAC units (computer room air conditioning). There are a few options for making these types of units as energy efficient as possible.

When purchasing the AC unit, many manufacturers offer variable-speed compressors that allow the unit to vary its cooling capacity to better suit changing load conditions, instead of running at full capacity even if the current load is low.

For data centers looking to improve the energy efficiency of the AC equipment they already have, Smartcool?s ECO3 offers an ideal retrofit option. The ECO3 is compatible with any 1 or 2 compressor CRAC unit, saving an average 15% kWh of the energy used by the system compressor.

Smartcool installed its ECO3 for PEER 1 data center in Vancouver, Canada. On two Liebert CRAC 3s, The two ECO3 units saved an average 13% or 18,407 kWh and gave PEER 1 a payback in 36 months. A similar project for Internet Solutions in South Africa saw the ECO3 produce energy savings of 14% kWh with a payback in under 12 months.

Energy savings are achieved with no impact to temperature or humidity- an incredibly important point for data centers where temperature control is critical to the business.

Large data centers

Larger data centers use chillers for a centrally controlled AC system. Purchasing a high efficiency variable frequency drive chiller with a condenser water reset tends to be the most energy efficient large-scale AC option for a data center.

Smartcool?s ESM is a highly successful retrofit for data center chillers, typically saving 8% to 12% kWh on the compressor operation. The ESM is a custom solution, that can be adapted to suit any control methodology, including advanced building management systems (BMS). It can also provide energy efficiency gains using an indirect interface (such as through the chiller manufacturer capacity control card), which preserves warranty conditions for the chiller.

Dell chose Smartcool?s ESM to improve the energy efficiency of the chillers in one of their Indian data centers. Savings of 16% were demonstrated and Dell saw a payback in just 21 months, all with no impact on temperature or humidity.

The new quad-core FX-4130 takes a 200MHz hop forward from its predecessor to a 3.8GHz base speed, and ramps up to 3.9GHz if it's feeling frisky. While it's thirstier than the earlier FX-4100 at 125W of maximum power draw, the unlocked chip's $112 retail cost is a potential sweet spot for those tailoring a system to a strict price. TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is planning to discuss veterans' issues with the Republican National Convention via satellite Wednesday as 2008 presidential nominee John McCain speaks in person.

Romney is set to fly to Indianapolis Wednesday morning to address the American Legion. Republican officials said they are finalizing plans for the 2012 nominee to make a remote appearance at the ongoing convention to discuss veterans' concerns in conjunction with McCain, a Navy veteran and former prisoner of war.

The 2012 Republican nominee is making a daylong detour to Indiana to speak to the veterans' service organization in person even as delegates are still gathered in Tampa. McCain ? nominated in St. Paul, Minn., four years ago, only to lose to Democrat Barack Obama ? will address the delegates Wednesday evening.

McCain is expected to discuss national security and defense issues. In recent weeks, McCain has led a tour of Republican senators to presidential battleground states, including Nevada, faulting Democrats for not acting to stop automatic defense cuts that would begin next year unless Congress steps in.

The address means Romney will appear, in some way, on all three nights of his convention. He was in the hall Tuesday evening as his wife, Ann, gave a sweeping speech aimed at showcasing his personal side. He plans to return Thursday for his own convention address.

The convention schedule ? and Romney's plans ? promise a focus on foreign affairs ahead of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan's Wednesday speech, the last item on the day's agenda. McCain is set to speak at 8 p.m. while former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will address foreign policy later in the evening.

Officials said they're still finalizing plans for how Romney and McCain's appearances will be coordinated. The former Massachusetts governor was formally nominated as the Republican Party's presidential candidate on Tuesday.

In a Tuesday interview, McCain said he was glad to have a role in Romney's convention, however small.

"It's not my show," the five-term Arizona senator said. "I'm just grateful they asked me to speak."

The Republican National convention finally got fully underway in Tampa, Florida Tuesday following a truncated first day because of Tropical Storm Isaac. The storm skirted Tampa and is now heading for the Gulf Coast. It's expected to make landfall tonight or early tomorrow, possibly as a category 1 or 2 hurricane, and may end up being the most exciting thing about this convention.

There's even some talk that the convention could be shortened because of the storm but that's only a contingency at this point, says Ben White, Wall Street reporter at Politico and author of the "Morning Money" column.

White expects a "more subdued tone at the convention" if the storm worsens and is upgraded to a hurricane.

"They Republicans don't want to be seen to be cheerleading when people are really in harms way," White explains. "They remember Katrina very well seven years ago? how bad a memory that is for Republicans and how George Bush handled that."

He told The Daily Ticker that Mitt Romney is expected to arrive in Tampa Tuesday, just in case he has to give his speech accepting the nomination before Thursday, as scheduled, because of the storm.

Romney accepts his party's nomination Thursday night with a much-anticipated speech."This is important opportunity for him in prime time on the networks to deliver his message .... to introduce himself to people who might not have been paying attention."

On the schedule tonight at the convention: the roll call vote of the states to nominate Mitt Romney and speeches by his wife Ann and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie who gives the keynote.

"Ann Romney will try to bring down the gender gap at least a little bit and put some more human touches on mitt Romney," says White. He expects Christie, who's giving the keynote speech to stress the message of less government and more tax cuts.

Asked what tomorrow's headline covering the convention will look like, White says it will be something like "an introduction to the softer side of Mitt Romney" highlighting Ann Romney's speech. "People don't really know her" White explained, adding that's not the case with Chris Christie.

Adolescent pot use leaves lasting mental deficits; Developing brain susceptible to lasting damage from exposure to marijuana

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? The persistent, dependent use of marijuana before age 18 has been shown to cause lasting harm to a person's intelligence, attention and memory, according to an international research team.

Among a long-range study cohort of more than 1,000 New Zealanders, individuals who started using cannabis in adolescence and used it for years afterward showed an average decline in IQ of 8 points when their age 13 and age 38 IQ tests were compared. Quitting pot did not appear to reverse the loss either, said lead researcher Madeline Meier, a post-doctoral researcher at Duke University. The results appear online Aug. 27 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The key variable in this is the age of onset for marijuana use and the brain's development, Meier said. Study subjects who didn't take up pot until they were adults with fully-formed brains did not show similar mental declines. Before age 18, however, the brain is still being organized and remodeled to become more efficient, she said, and may be more vulnerable to damage from drugs.

"Marijuana is not harmless, particularly for adolescents," said Meier, who produced this finding from the long term Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study. The study has followed a group of 1,037 children born in 1972-73 in Dunedin, New Zealand from birth to age 38 and is led by Terrie Moffitt and Avshalom Caspi, psychologists who hold dual appointments at Duke and the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London.

About 5 percent of the study group were considered marijuana-dependent, or were using more than once a week before age 18. A dependent user is one who keeps using despite significant health, social or family problems.

At age 38, all of the study participants were given a battery of psychological tests to assess memory, processing speed, reasoning and visual processing. The people who used pot persistently as teens scored significantly worse on most of the tests. Friends and relatives routinely interviewed as part of the study were more likely to report that the persistent cannabis users had attention and memory problems such as losing focus and forgetting to do tasks.

The decline in IQ among persistent cannabis users could not be explained by alcohol or other drug use or by having less education, Moffitt said.

While 8 IQ points may not sound like a lot on a scale where 100 is the mean, a loss from an IQ of 100 to 92 represents a drop from being in the 50th percentile to being in the 29th, Meier said. Higher IQ correlates with higher education and income, better health and a longer life, she said. "Somebody who loses 8 IQ points as an adolescent may be disadvantaged compared to their same-age peers for years to come," Meier said.

Laurence Steinberg, a Temple University psychologist who was not involved in the research, said this study is among the first to distinguish between cognitive problems the person might have had before taking up marijuana, and those that were apparently caused by the drug. This is consistent with what has been found in animal studies, Steinberg added, but it has been difficult to measure in humans.

Animal studies involving nicotine, alcohol and cocaine have shown that chronic exposures before the brain is fully developed can lead to more dependence and long-term changes in the brain. "This study points to adolescence as a time of heightened vulnerability," Steinberg said. "The findings are pretty clear that it is not simply chronic use that causes deficits, but chronic use with adolescent onset."

What isn't possible to know from this study is what a safer age for persistent use might be, or what dosage level causes the damage, Meier said. After many years of decline among US teens, daily marijuana use has been seen to increase slightly in the last few years, she added. Last year, for the first time, US teens were more likely to be smoking pot than tobacco.

"The simple message is that substance use is not healthy for kids," Avshalom Caspi said via email from London. "That's true for tobacco, alcohol, and apparently for cannabis."

US stock futures up slightly, signal subdued open

NEW YORK (AP) ? Wall Street appears headed for a subdued opening, as the absence of stimulus action by central banks in the U.S. and China dismays investors while the German economy shows signs of weakening.

Dow Jones industrial average futures rose 10 points to 13,166 about 75 minutes ahead of the market opening. Standard & Poor's 500 index futures are up 4 points to 1,413. Nasdaq futures are up 15 points to 2,790.

Investors are growing cautious about the prospect of more economic stimulus from central banks in China and the U.S. The London stock market is closed for a bank holiday, keeping trading in check.

A big event that could move the market lies ahead ? U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's speech in Wyoming later this week.

In Europe, France's CAC-40 index was up 0.3 percent at 3,444 and Germay's DAX was up 0.3 percent at 6,988.

The small increases came in the face of several pieces of bad news.

Tiffany & Co.'s earnings missed Wall Street expectations, and the luxury jeweler cut its full-year earnings guidance.

Market sentiment also was dented Monday by news that German business optimism, as calculated by the Ifo business survey, fell more than expected in August. "Enterprises are increasingly pessimist about their business development," said Hans-Werner Sinn, the head of the Ifo institute.

Economists have been warning that the debt crisis in the 17-country eurozone could eventually catch up with Germany.

Meanwhile, Germany's economy minister rejected calls for Greece to get more time to implement reforms, saying Athens needs to respect the bailout deal reached with its international creditors.

The question of how to avert a Greek debt default, which could spark a chain reaction among other ailing European economies, has preoccupied EU leaders as they return from their traditional summer break.

French President Francois Hollande urged Greece on Saturday to do more to show its commitment to reforms, and offered the country no immediate hope for relief from its current regime of painful austerity measures. Like German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Hollande said decisions on Greece need to wait for a report by debt inspectors that is due in late September at the earliest.

Meanwhile, the respected German weekly Der Spiegel reported in its latest edition that Merkel wants EU leaders to forge ahead with deeper political integration within the unwieldy 27-nation bloc.

In Asia, markets were unsettled after Apple's court victory in a high-stakes patent dispute sent shares of Samsung Electronics into a tailspin.

After more than three weeks of trial in the U.S. and two days of deliberations, the nine-person jury said Friday that Samsung copied Apple's iPhone and iPad and ordered the South Korean firm to pay more than $1 billion in damages.

Samsung said it will ask the judge in the Northern District Court of California in San Jose to overturn the jury's verdict and, if that fails, will appeal the decision to a higher court.

The verdict battered shares of Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest maker of smartphones, memory chips, display panels and televisions. It plunged 7.5 percent in Seoul. South Korea's benchmark Kospi fell 0.2 percent to 1,917.87.

Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 0.4 percent to 19,798.67. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, and mainland China also retreated. Japan's Nikkei 224 index rose 0.2 percent to 9,085.39 while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.1 percent to 4,343.70.

Benchmark crude for October delivery rose 90 cents to $97.05 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 12 cents to finish at $96.15 per barrel on the Nymex on Friday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2521 from $1.2519 late Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 78.68 yen from 78.70 yen.

Lethal Guitarist Eric Cook Loses Cancer Battle

There?s sad news to report, as Eric Cook, guitarist for power/prog metal outfit Lethal, has lost his battle with cancer.

Cook co-founded the Kentucky-based band with his brother Glen and Tom Malicoat, before rounding out the band with drummer Jerry Hartmann in 1990. The group issued their debuted disc, ?Programmed,? through Metal Blade Records and followed with the five-song EP ?Your Favorite God,? before wrapping their promising career with the full length ?Poison Seed? in 1996 before splitting up.

In 2006, there started to be rumors of a reunion, with the band eventually agreeing to play the 2007 Chicago Powerfest. The group went on to play a couple more festivals that year, as well as Headbangers Open Air in 2008.

Keep it True festival organizer Oliver Weinsheimer told Blabbermouth, ?I?m in a state of shock ? I tried to help them getting further with new music and more gigs. I met the guys again at the gigs at Headbangers Open Air and Bang Your Head and then it got a bit quiet around them until today I got this shocking news.?

He added, ?Eric was one of the nicest musicians I ever worked with and a real gentleman. The whole next Keep it True will be dedicated to his honor and we will try to arrange a final farewell/tribute Lethal show for Keep it True 2014. This is something he deserves for all the beautiful music and joy he gave to us. The whole Keep it True family sends their condolences to his family, friends, and his band members, who all go through dark times right now.?
