Report: Apple is pitching a set-top box to cable providers

5 hrs.

Tired of rumors about bigger iPhones and smaller iPads? No worries, there's plenty of other Apple gossip right now?? such as a report that the Cupertino-based company is currently courting cable providers and?attempting to cajole them into allowing folks to use an Apple device of some sort "as a set-top box for live television and other content."

This report comes to us by way of the folks at the?Wall Street Journal, who explain that?"people familiar with the matter" offered up this vague information and that it represents "Apple's most ambitious crack at infiltrating the living room after years of trying."

In essence, Apple supposedly wants you to purchase one of its devices for "what could be hundreds of dollars," the Wall?Street?Journal's Jessica Vascellaro and Shalini Ramachandran write, rather than renting a set-top box from a cable provider "for $10 to $15 a month."?But that's not all. Two other sources tell the Wall Street Journal that the technology which would be used for this task could eventually be embedded in televisions. (Say "hello" again to?the wave of rumors about a mysterious iTV.)

We've reached out to Apple for comment on these matters, but?? since the company tends to remain tight-lipped when it comes to speculation like this?? we do not expect to hear anything of note.
