Vox Humana to archive helmer talks

Film journo and documaker Gideon Bachmann is launching Vox Humana -- the Voice Bank, an archive of interviews with directors such as Federico Fellini, Andrei Tarkovsk and Pierpaolo Pasolini, spanning several decades. It will operate alongside Martin Scorsese's Film Foundation, dedicated to pic preservation. "The idea is to keep directors themselves alive, not just their works," Bachmann said. The Switzerland-based Fondation Fellini Pour Le Cinema, which is financed by the Swiss lottery, is backing the initiative and contributing coin. Bachmann, who has written for a wide range of publications, including Variety and Playboy -- and was a personal friend of Fellini -- said Vox Humana comprises some 800 hours of recordings, mostly from his personal archives. He said the idea is to build on it with material from TV and radio interviews collecting dust on shelves and gather fresh interviews at film festivals around the world. Karlovy Vary and Locarno are among the fests already in advanced talks to set up onstage conversations with directors to be organized and recorded by Vox Humana. New York-based specialty DVD label, the Criterion Collection, has acquired U.S. rights to the existing material.
