Harris Interactive conducted the survey between 14 December 2006 and 12 March 2007. The survey was commissioned by the drug company Novartis.The survey also included a list of other potentially taboo topics, including HIV, gonorrhea, mental illness, obesity, drug addiction and cancer.

Most people without genital herpes said they would avoid having a relationship with someone who has genital herpes and break with a partner who has genital herpes.

The survey included 503 U.S. adults with genital herpes and about 1,400 other adults who have reported they have genital herpes.

Among people with genital herpes, 36% said they would tell their partners about their genital herpes ?well before having sex for the first time, and 68% said they were concerned about transmitting genital herpes to sexual partners.

Most participants ? 64% of those without genital herpes and 56% of people with genital herpes ? said they did not think about these topics were taboo. However, genital herpes was ranked number one taboo subject.
