COMMENTARY | President Barack Obama is still preaching that Congress needs to pass the jobs bill even though they have made it clear to him that it will not pass even in the edited form. The political games over the jobs bill have been going on for almost two months now. As a former political consultant, I would suggest that the president do everything that he can to get parts of the bill passed as soon as possible instead of continuing to shift all of the blame for a failed plan on others.
The suggestion has been made about breaking up the jobs bill and trying to get it passed through in parts. Both parties have stated that there are aspects of the legislation that they both approve of such as improvement of certain areas of the infrastructure and particular tax breaks. As long as these parts were kept as is, they should pass through Congress without an issue.
This plan would help President Obama in many ways. First off, he would be able to show some type of progress to the American people. This could improve the portions of his approval rating that deal with his ability to create jobs. Next, he could show that he was finally taking an opportunity to reach across the political aisle. He would finally be able to make good on his greatest campaign promise. Best of all, he could finally have the steps taken towards getting people back to work.
With the continued occupation of Wall Street, and other locations around the country, President Obama could boost himself with even the smallest amount of legislation passage. He could spin the passage as something that was a gift to the occupiers and could improve his chances with younger voters. He could say that he was inspired to get the legislation passed as soon as possible by the messages of the movement.
If the president wants to have a chance of reelection, he needs to work with Congress to ensure that the jobs bill passes. Instead of wasting everybody's time with trying to intimidate Congress into passage, he should be sitting down with leaders and figuring out what concessions his bill needs to make. For once in his term, he needs to put aside his political games and work for us and not just himself.
