So I've been alcohol free for 38 days in a row so far as I'm writing this and doing fantastic so far. One of the major factors in helping me quit and stay sober is thinking of all the areas I can improve in and experience without alcohol taking up my valuable time, energy, health, and money. Here are some of the major areas I have been improving in, or look to improve in, down the road instead of boozing it up:
1) Work:
Let's start with this one since everyone already knows it's one of my biggest motivators. I've been helping people become their best possible selves through proper fitness and nutrition for 9 years now. I am now transitioning from Personal Training to growing a massive business in FRUGAL FITNESS that is helping millions all over the world to improve their health and fitness on a budget. This is my passion and my life! To do this successfully, I can't be a hypocrite and I can't be working towards my own health and fitness at less than 110%. Without alcohol damaging my health, physique, drive, and wallet I can grow, innovate, and help others like never before. I could go on for hours on all the areas that Frugal Fitness will be growing and improving now and in the very near future, you'll just have to stay tuned. Competitors be warned: Join me or be outworked and outdone!
2) Improved Health / Workouts / Physique:
My joints don't hurt as much, I don't feel like I need to nap as much, and my drive to workout is higher than ever! I can finally get back in the best shape of my life instead of settling for mediocrity. That means heavier weights, more cardio, more stretching and foam roller (injury rehab and prevention), and much better workout videos to come! You will see some great new workouts and a great new physique coming soon. Also, more working out equates to less stress!
3) More Community Service:
Over the past few years, I've honestly only contributed the?occasional?check or website promotion for charities and fundraisers. While admittedly I haven't had the most time or money available, that is still no excuse for not helping my fellow man. I plan on donating more time and money to charities and eventually putting together my own fundraising promotions program to help causes that I think are important. This is an area I've been severely lacking in for many years and need to?drastically?improve.
4) READING: It Builds Brain Cells!
Years of drinking and the more repetitive aspects of social media, personal training, & business building have really taken a toll on my previously book smart brain. I used to be a reading machine and at least a bit smarter in many areas. I am going to be reading a lot more to build those brain cells back up. I'll be reading books for pleasure, health and fitness magazines to keep on top of what the industry is promoting (both good and bad), and scientifically based literature and research in health, fitness, nutrition, and more to stay ahead of the curve. I think we all can agree that any of these options will help my brain and writing skills better than staring at Twitter and YouTube comments for hours on end (which I will still continue to do though haha).
5) Photography:
I'm buying a $500ish DSLR Camera shortly, mostly for my Frugal Fitness TV videos, but also for photography purposes. Now I admittedly don't know much about photography, but I am looking to learn. Besides being very helpful for business purposes, I really love the idea of capturing the emotion or message of a moment with a still image. I actually used to be somewhat artistic at a much younger age, before I tossed any interest in that aside in favor of pumping iron, chasing women, and making money. I might not be too great at first with my new camera when I get it, but I learn quickly!
6) Cooking!
That's right, Mr. Frugal Diet is not a very good cook! Not necessarily because I just suck, but because I've been so busy, on the go, and / or lazy that I just resort to quick healthy snacks, shakes, and ready to eat foods like Kashi cereal, almonds, canned tuna, turkey slices, etc. I've had to outsource my cooking and recipes for the most part, but I'm sick of doing that. For the sake of my business, my own health and fitness, and just life in general I'll be working on my culinary skills to get them up to par and beyond. You'll eventually see that materialize in more cooking videos where I'm actually doing the work and instruction, and not just the nutritional analysis! :)
7) Traveling:
I haven't done much traveling in my 26 years of life. I've been too busy saving money and working my ass off to stay debt-free, building a business, and investing in that business' future success. I've been to Montreal a few times, Florida, Texas, of course all over New England, NJ, NY...and that's about it. Never been on a cruise or tropical island. No Euro-Trips. I do want to visit several parts of California (especially Venice Beach's Golds Gym), and I want to visit Vegas when the Arnold Bodybuilding & Fitness Expo are in town. I'd like to visit Germany someday to see the homeland of my distant relatives. And any warm or tropical place would always be good. With a little less money spent on booze, and no money spent on booze during these trips, I think I might just be able to swing it financially! If I'm lucky and continue working my ass off, I'll be sponsored to go to California and/or Vegas for little or no cost!
8) Writing (Non-Fitness)
I have been doing non-fitness writing off and on for several years now. I need a lot of work but I have some potential. I want to continue improving my writing skills so I can write better when it comes to business, lifestyle, technology, entertainment, humor, poetry, and eventually my memoirs "The Frugal Life" where I talk about the good and bad of what I've been through. Yes I need work on my grammar, big time.
9) Fitness Modeling
I know this goes along with work (like most things I"m passionate about), but I've really wanted to compile a much larger and better fitness modeling portfolio. The new camera and new fitness regimen will certainly help. I will be reaching out to local professional photographers to help me expand my fitness modeling portfolio to a decent level. While I don't have the pipe dream of making a lot of money doing fitness modeling, I would like to do the occassional photoshoot or paid gig here and there along with using it as a business promotion tool. I really appreciate the few photographers who have helped me out and given me a chance up until this point, I am very grateful.?
10) Natural Bodybuilding Competition
Ah the topic I've been wavering on over the years. Should I compete in natural bodybuilding again?? Well let's put it this way, I've never really competed successfully. The two competitions I was in, I did EVERYTHING wrong. I ate wrong, I drank, I worked out wrong, I cut wrong, I posed wrong, etc. I didn't come in last place either time but I deserved to. I'm still not sure if I'm going to compete again in the next year, or several years down the road, but it's gonna happen. And this time I'm going to do it right.?
The jury is still out on those two but who knows...
I hope reading these personal reasons that have helped me make a decision for the better can help you as well. As I said in my first post, I'm not going to be preaching about the evils of alcohol every post, but I will be posting about it at least once or twice a month along with everything else in health and fitness. Thanks for reading and stay healthy my friends!
