Master Skills to Prevent Weight Yo-Yo Before New Diet - Psych Central

Master Skills to Prevent Weight Yo-Yo Before New Diet A provocative new weight loss approach asks women to not lose weight for the first eight weeks of the program.

Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine found women who spent eight weeks mastering weight-maintenance skills before embarking on a weight-loss program shed the same number of pounds as women who started a weight-loss program immediately.

Moreover, the ?maintenance-first? women regained only 3 pounds on average a year later, compared to the average 7-pound gain for the immediate dieters.

The study?s authors say that the maintenance-first approach may offer a way to halt the cycle of yo-yo dieting.

?Those eight weeks were like a practice run. Women could try out different stability skills and work out the kinks without the pressure of worrying about how much weight they had lost,? said lead author Michaela Kiernan, PhD.

?We found that waiting those eight weeks didn?t make the women any less successful at losing weight. But even better, women who practiced stability first were more successful in maintaining that loss after a year.?

The study is published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.

Experts say that a modest weight loss of 5-10 percent of body weight can significantly decrease the risk factors for heart disease.

However, for many, weight loss is often put back on in the weeks following the diet.

Over the years, Kiernan has interviewed both those who have succeeded and those who have failed at keeping the pounds off. She was particularly struck by one woman who said that she had never ?maintained? her weight in her life; instead, she was always either losing or gaining.

?She had no sense what she was aiming for,? Kiernan said. ?We wanted to see if there was a way to help people get away from this all-or-nothing approach that is associated with losing weight.?

Conceptually, weight maintenance may require a different set of skills and behaviors than those used for losing weight.

As such, Kiernan her colleagues came up with the idea to teach weight-maintenance skills first so that people could experience how to fine-tune their behavior in response to everyday pleasures and disruptions rather than being ?on? or ?off? a diet.

Weight stability skills include finding low-fat or low-calorie foods that taste as good as high-fat/high-calorie options to avoid feelings of deprivation and occasionally eating and savoring small amounts of favorite high-fat/high-calorie foods.

Additional tips include weighing daily to see how body weight naturally fluctuates from day to day; and strategically losing a few pounds before a known disruption (such as a vacation) to minimize its effects.

Kiernan said the approach is designed to help people make peace with the scale and learn how to pay ?relaxed attention? to their weight in ways that can be maintained over the long term ? without keeping food records.

?Losing a significant amount of weight requires a lot of focused attention to what you?re doing, and most people can?t keep up that intensity over the long term,? Kiernan said. ?For weight maintenance, we wanted something that would make the day-to-day experience positive while not requiring overwhelming amounts of effort.?

For the study, 267 overweight/obese women were randomized into one of two groups. The women in the control group immediately began taking part in a 20-week behavioral weight-loss program that encouraged greater intake of vegetables and fruit, increased physical activity and use of proven dieting strategies, such as keeping daily food records.

The women attended weekly 90-minute sessions with a group facilitator to learn problem-solving skills aimed at losing weight. At the end of 20 weeks, they spent eight weeks using a similar problem-solving approach to learn weight-maintenance skills.

By contrast, the women in the maintenance-first group spent the initial eight weeks learning the stability skills Kiernan?s group had developed.

The women were asked not to lose any weight during that time; if they did lose a few pounds, they were asked to gain them back. Kiernan said this skill mimics a more real-world approach for maintaining weight within a range of a few pounds, rather than aiming for a single number on the scale.

After the eight weeks were up, the women embarked on the same 20-week weight-loss program as the women in the control group.

After both groups completed their 28-week programs, Kiernan said the results showed that the women on average lost a similar amount of weight ? about 17 pounds, or roughly 9 percent of their initial weight. Once the weekly group sessions stopped, the women were on their own for the following year.

?We scheduled the weekly sessions to end in October so that the women would have to navigate the holidays by themselves, without any guidance from the group facilitators,? said Kiernan, the principal investigator for the study. ?We wanted this to mirror real-life conditions as much as possible.?

When the women were weighed one year later after no contact with their group facilitators, Kiernan said she and her collaborators were pleased to see that the maintenance-first women had regained only 3 pounds on average, compared to a 7-pound average gain for the control group. She added that the 3-pound gain falls squarely within the personalized range that the women were taught to use.

Additionally, 33 percent of the women in the maintenance-first group displayed what the researchers categorize as a favorable pattern ? that is, losing at least 5 percent of their body weight without regaining more than 5 pounds over the course of a year ? compared with 18 percent of the women in the control group.

Kiernan said the maintenance-first approach, though sounding a bit unorthodox, could be a useful tool for those who are trying to slim down and be healthier. ?This approach helps people learn how to make small, quick adjustments that can help them maintain their weight without requiring a lot of effort,? she said.

Northeast crawls back to business after monster storm

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. Northeast began crawling back to normal on Wednesday after monster storm Sandy crippled transportation, knocked out power for millions and killed at least 45 people in nine states with a massive storm surge and rain that caused epic flooding.

Financial markets reopened with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange, and packed buses took residents back to work with the subway system halted after seawater flooded its tunnels.

John F. Kennedy and Newark airports reopened with limited service after thousands of flights were canceled, leaving travelers stuck for days. New York's LaGuardia Airport, the third of the airports that serve the nation's busiest airspace, was flooded and remained closed.

It will take days or weeks to recover from the massive power and mass transit outages.

With six days to go before the November 6 elections, President Barack Obama will visit storm-ravaged areas of the New Jersey shore, where Sandy made landfall on Monday.

He will be accompanied by Republican Governor Chris Christie, a vocal backer of presidential challenger Mitt Romney. Nevertheless, Christie has praised Obama and the federal response to the storm.

The storm killed 27 people in New York state, including 22 in New York City, and six in New Jersey. Seven other states reported fatalities. One disaster-modeling company said Sandy may have caused up to $15 billion in insured losses.

Sandy killed 69 people in the Caribbean last week before it slammed into the U.S. East Coast and pushed inland, dumping snow in the Appalachian Mountains and other inland areas.

Remnants of the storm churned slowly over Pennsylvania on Wednesday, the National Weather Service said. Winter storm warnings were in effect from southwestern Pennsylvania to eastern Tennessee.

Battered by a record storm surge of nearly 14 feet of water, large sections of New York City remained submerged under several feet of water. In the city's borough of Staten Island, police used helicopters to pluck stranded residents from rooftops.

Across the Hudson River in Hoboken, New Jersey, members of the National Guard arrived to help residents pump floodwater from their homes, the city said on Twitter.

More than 8.2 million homes and businesses remained without electricity across several states after trees toppled by fierce winds tore down power lines.

In New Jersey, Christie said it could take seven to 10 days before power was restored statewide.

Subway and commuter tunnels under New York City, which carry several million riders a day, were under several feet of water.

In the lower half of Manhattan, a quarter of a million residents remained without power after a transformer explosion at a Con Edison substation Monday night.

CRIPPLED COMMUTE

New York City likely will struggle without subway service for days, authorities said. Buses were operating on a limited basis and many residents were walking long distances or scrambling to grab scarce taxi cabs on the streets.

Sunday's New York Marathon will go on as scheduled, but Wednesday night's Halloween parade through Greenwich Village was postponed. On Broadway, the Theater League announced that most shows would resume performances on Wednesday. Shows had been canceled since Sunday due to the storm.

In New Jersey, Christie took a helicopter tour of the devastation on Tuesday along the shore, where boats were adrift, boardwalks washed away and roads blocked by massive sand drifts. He stopped in the badly damaged resort towns of Belmar and Avalon.

"I was just here walking this place this summer, and the fact that most of it is gone is just incredible," he said at one stop.

Sandy hit the East Coast with a week to go to the November 6 presidential election, dampening an unprecedented drive to encourage early voting and raising questions whether some polling stations will be ready to open on Election Day.

Obama faces political danger if the government fails to respond well, as was the case with his predecessor George W. Bush's botched handling of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Obama and Romney put campaigning on hold for a second day on Tuesday but Romney planned to hold rallies in the battleground state of Florida on Wednesday and Obama seemed likely to resume campaigning on Thursday.

Sandy became the biggest storm to hit the United States in generations when it crashed ashore with hurricane-force winds on Monday near the New Jersey gambling resort of Atlantic City.

Why Energy May Be Abundant But Not Cheap | Peak Oil News and ...

It doesn?t matter how abundant liquid fossil fuels might be; it?s their cost that impacts the economy.

Actually, ?peak oil? is about the world running out of cheap, easy-to-get oil. That means fossil fuels might be abundant (supply exceeds demand) for a time but still remain expensive.

The abundance or scarcity of energy is only one factor in its price. As the cost of extraction, transport, refining, and taxes rise, so does the ?cost basis? or the total cost of production from the field to the pump. Anyone selling oil below its cost basis will lose money and go out of business.

We are trained to expect that anything that is abundant will be cheap, but energy is a special case: it can be abundant but costly, because it?s become costly to produce.

EROEI (energy returned on energy invested) helps illuminate this point. In the good old days, one barrel of oil invested might yield 100 barrels of oil extracted and refined for delivery. Now it takes one barrel of oil to extract and refine 5 barrels of oil, or perhaps as little as 3 barrels of unconventional or deep sea oil.

In the old days, oil would shoot out of the ground once a hole was drilled down to the deposit. All the easy-to-find, easy-to-get oil has been consumed; now even Saudi Arabia must pump millions of gallons of water into its wells to push the oil up out of the ground. Recent discoveries of oil are in costly locales deep offshore or in extreme conditions. It takes billions of dollars to erect the platforms and wells to reach the oil, so the cost basis of this new oil is high.

It doesn?t matter how abundant liquid fossil fuels might be; it?s their cost that impacts the economy. High energy costs mean households must spend more of their income on energy, leaving less for savings and consumption. High energy costs act as a hidden ?tax? on the economy, raising the price of everything that uses energy.

As household incomes drop and vehicles become more efficient, demand for gasoline declines. Normally, we would expect lower demand to lead to lower prices. But since the production costs of oil have risen, there is a ?floor? for the price of gasoline. As EROEI drops, the price floor rises, regardless of demand.

This decrease in real incomes and ratcheting-higher energy costs could lead to a situation where energy is abundant but few can afford to buy much of it.

The relative abundance of fracked natural gas and low-energy density fossil fuels like tar sands and shale has led to a media frenzy that confuses abundance with low cost. This article (via correspondent Steve K.) illustrates the tone and breezy selection of data to back up the ?no worries, Mate? forecast of abundant cheap liquid fuels: An economy awash in oil. (MacLeans)

Not so fast, reports Rex Weyler of the Deep Green Blog. Here is Rex?s response to the above article.

Fair point about the volume of unconventional ? deepwater, shale gas & oil, tar sands, etc. ? hydrocarbons. These reserves may even produce peakies and/or sustain the plateau longer than some observers believe. However, biophysical restraints remain real; peak oil remains real; peak net energy appears imminent, and the impact on economies is already being felt globally. Points to consider:The dregs: In spite of huge shale & tar reserve discoveries, peak discoveries remain well behind us, in the 1960s. My father, a petroleum geologist his entire life (and still, in Houston, Kazakstan?), knew about shale and tar deposits when I was a teenager in the 1960s. He called them ?the dregs.? These deposits are not really news within the oil industry. And they are the dregs because of high cost, low EROI and rapid depletion.

EROI: The volume of these low-net-energy reserves could extend peak oil production for decades, but at fast-declining net energy returned to society. We high-graded Earth?s hydrocarbons, just as we high-graded the forests, fish, copper, tin, water, and so forth. We?ve taken the best, highest EROI hydrocarbons, the 100:1 free-flowing wells of the 1930s and 40s. We?re now into the 3:1 and 2:1 tar sands.

For example: damming rivers in Northern BC, to send electricity to the fracking fields, to send shale gas to Alberta, to cook the boreal substrate, and mix the black sludge with gas condensate shipped in from California and by pipeline from Kitimat to Fort McMurray, to mix with the bitumen, to pipe to Vancouver Harbour, to ship to China, to burn in a power plant, to supply electricity to their manufacturing empire.

By the time any of this energy gets used to actually make something useful to someone in society, and by the time that user puts that usefulness to work to feed, clothe, house, or heal anyone, there is no net-energy left.

Our food in North America is already negative net energy by1:10 at best, up to 1:17 or worse for much of the crap we eat. This matters. EROI at well-head, EROI at the consumer pump, and EROI at the point of society?s actual service all matter.

Well-head EROI, counting all public subsidies, is now in the 5:1 to 1:1 range for all these ?non-conventional? (meaning the dregs) hydrocarbon deposits. Money can be made. Some energy can be delivered to Society, but this is already way below the well-head EROI that could likely run the current complexity of the human society, much less ?grow? economies.

The degrading reserves take us down along the EROI curve, in which Net Energy returned to society falls off a cliff around 6:1, and is in freefall by 3:1. Net-energy alone kills the idea of much economic growth from a booming hydrocarbon bonanza (other than some great stock plays along the way). Furthermore, depletion renders the idea ever more unlikely:

Depletion: Depletion rates on these gas fields have arrived quickly and appear drastic by historic industry standards. The fracking fields peak early and decline swiftly. In the Bakken shale field ? one of the great North American saviour fields ? the average well has produced ~ 85k barrels in its first year and then declined at about 40% per year. The newer average wells peak earlier and decline faster, so the overall trend is down.

The depletion moves the production process along a function that approaches zero net energy? Down we go along the EROI curve? 5:1 .. 4:1 .. 3 .. 2 ? and then really complex society breaks down. An Amish farmer gets 10:1.

The Bakken break-even oil price is $85, so there is no profit in any of this right now, but of course there will be if global depletion exceeds demand from crashing economies.

Depletion ? both in volume and quality ? and depletion for all industrial materials and energy stores, EROI, and economic stagnation all work as feedback loops. No one knows the bifurcation points in this complex system. We try to predict those, but miss by a longshot sometimes. Complex societies crash in this manner, declining returns on investments in complexity, from Babylon to London and Washington. See J. Tainter, H. Odum, N. Georgescu-Roegen, Hall, Cleveland, et al.

Here are some depletion data on The Oil Drum: Is Shale Oil Production from Bakken Headed for a Run with ?The Red Queen??.

See A Review of the Past and Current State of EROI Data (PDF) by Hall, Cleveland, et al. (source: www.mdpi.com)

There is a lot of EROI data here: Obstacles Facing US Wind Energy. (The Oil Drum)

Below is the EROI curve, only the ?We are here? point at 10:1 is the modern average, and from a few years ago. The new conventional stuff is coming in lower and and the enhanced recovery, shale and tar fields are already over the falls at 6 or 5:1 for the better stuff (best dregs), and 3:1 to 1:1 for the dregs of the dregs, the deeper shale and tar sands.

So yes, our friends are correct about the great volume of tar, shale, deep, heavy hydrocarbons, but increasing production of world liquid hydrocarbons much beyond the current 85mb/d is not likely, and increasing net production is even less likely. As you may know, net production per capita peaked in 1979. Actual net production is peaking now. This is the figure that counts: Actual current Net Production Delivered to Society.

Growing this figure is technically possible, and may happen with some massive production bonanzas, i.e. we may see actual production push above 90mb/day, or higher, and may even see net production increase, but a major glut of hydrocarbons? No. Not remotely.

When settlers first came to North America, they found copper nuggets the size of horses exposed in river beds. China just bought the best known, last, huge, moderate-to-low-grade, strip-minable, high-cost copper field in the world, in Afghanistan, for $billions over the western bids. There will be others, but rest assured: They will be lower grade, higher cost, and the competition will be more intense. When was the last time you bought a ?copper? fitting at the hardware store. They?re crap. The alloys are crap. Because the ore quality is in decline and the costs of extraction are rising. Same with oil, trees, tin, coal?.

Make no mistake: The war for the dwindling materials and energy flow is well underway.

Thank you, Rex, for this commentary on EROI and the quality and cost of hydrocarbon resources. Complex systems like economies are nonlinear, and so history does not necessarily track linear extrapolations of present trends. With that caveat in mind, the preponderance of evidence supports the notion that fossil fuel energy may remain abundant in the sense that supply meets or exceeds demand in a global recession, but the price of liquid fuels may remain high enough to create a drag on growth, employment, tax revenues and all the other economic metrics impacted by high energy costs.

Family seeks help after losing home in fire

KINGSTON, OK - A house near Kingston was destroyed by a fire Saturday night leaving a family of three with no place to go.

Tiffany Mize said she and her two kids barely made it out alive after she woke up to find her entire home engulfed in flames.

"I screamed to my daughter, 'Our house is on fire, grab the baby,'" Mize said.

Mize ran to get help from neighbors but it was too late.

"When I went to the door, all I could see was flames," neighbor Dru Sillamatula said.

The fire marshal has not made an official ruling on the fire but Mize thinks it may have been the porch light.

"My family's life was at stake here," Mize said. "We made it out in about forty-five seconds and it engulfed. We got to the end of the driveway here and it was already in flames."

Mize said she was in the process of purchasing home insurance when it caught fire. Now the burning memory of that night is all that is left.

The family has set up an account at the Landmark Bank in Kingston for donations. It is registered under the Mize Family Benefit Account.

Donations can also be mailed to the Landmark Bank:

The Motivation Myth | The Best Life Blog: Fitness, Weight-Loss and ...

Posted By Juli Dimos on October 31, 2012

For most of the last six years, I?ve attempted to lose weight and get in shape. There was one major problem: Despite my efforts, the motivation to stick to it was like a myth, a fantasy, an ever-elusive unicorn. It was simply impossible to grasp.

Nine weeks ago, when my husband finished school, that mythical unicorn finally materialized. It was a beautiful creature, full of promise and hope. Was it pure magic? Had the planets finally aligned? Had some higher power heard my prayers and decided to finally take pity on me?

It was nothing quite so mystical or cosmic. My motivation spiked as my schedule cleared. When my husband was in school, there was too much going on?there was no room for error. Even the slightest scheduling change made it impossible to keep up a workout routine. I was simply overextended.

Now, I?m reveling in my newfound freedom. In fact, I?ve made myself some promises about my time and my priorities. Here are three that you might find useful.

  1. Edit my schedule ruthlessly.
I?m an emotional scheduler?I want to do everything. But everything is no good for my weight loss goals.? And it?s not fun either. In the fashion and writing world, editing is a constant companion?one that hurts but always results in something better. I?m learning to edit my schedule with the goal of leaving 30 percent of my time free.
  2. Visualize my week.
Visualizing the times in my week when I am probably going to be stressed helps me with step one. Is there something in my schedule that seems innocuous but really causes the most anxiety? I might consider removing that event entirely if possible or figuring out a way around it. If I can?t remove it, I might spend some extra time prepping for it.
  3. Be honest with myself when I?m about to derail.
For the last nine weeks, I?ve taken on a six-day-a-week exercise routine, as well as eating very healthfully. I then attempted to add an elimination diet (under the guidance of my nutritionist) on top of this to make sure I wasn?t allergic to anything. I started feeling frustrated and angry, and my unicorn disappeared. I stopped the elimination diet, and just like that, my motivation returned. The elimination diet was one thing too many. The lesson here: Know your limits, and if you feel yourself pushing up against them, take a step back.

What promises can you make to yourself to maintain?or welcome back?your motivation?

One of the most fascinating storylines was Ryan O?Reilly?s. He was a violent and manipulative inmate who pitted his enemies against each other and sent his brother to the electric chair.

But what separated him from his fellow inmates weren?t his controversial antics; it was the lump he discovered in his breast in the second season. O?Reilly was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent aggressive treatment. ?Oz? was the first television program that taught me that breast cancer was gender indiscriminate.

Men have a 1 in 1,000 chance of developing breast cancer in their lifetimes according to the BreastCancer.gov. The American Cancer Society reported that this year, there will 2,190 new cases of invasive breast cancer among men and about 410 men will die from it.

Actor Richard Roundtree, who is revered for his turn as John Shaft in 70s Blaxploitation flicks, is one of the fortunate survivors. He stumbled on a cancerous lump in his right breast in the 1970s. To combat the illness, he received a mastectomy before undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

However, most African American men aren?t as blessed. Researchers from Columbia University found that black men are:

    - More likely to have later-stage disease and larger tumors than white men.

    - 48 percent less likely to be referred to a medical oncologist.

    - 56 percent less likely to receive chemotherapy.

    - Less likely to survive five years. Among black men, survival is 66 percent compared to 90 percent of white male patients.

Despite Columbia?s disturbing findings, breast cancer isn?t?a death sentence for all black men. Women are encouraged to perform monthly self-exams to ensure earliest detection. Men should perform this ritual as well according to the African American Breast Cancer Alliance. When conducting the exam, be sure to check for:

    - Lumps in the chest, collarbone, nipples and underarms. This is often the first common symptom of breast cancer in men. The Columbia University study found that lumps usually appear right beneath the breast, so check that area regularly.

    - Nipple discharge that has a foul odor or is filled with blood or pus.

    - Unexpected skin changes, including painful rashes or tender spots near the breasts.

If any of these symptoms are present, seek assistance immediately to increase chances of developing a valiant strategy to combat the illness.

Breast cancer isn?t preventable.?The Early Show?s?health correspondent, Emily Senay, Ph.D., told CBS that ?Preventing [breast cancer] really would require a much better understanding of what causes it. And we really don?t know yet what causes breast cancer.? However, several studies have discovered that a healthier lifestyle can stave off breast cancer. The African American Breast Cancer Alliance encourages black men to:

    - Learn about their family?s cancer history.

    - Reduce their alcohol and fat intake.

    - Maintain a healthy body weight by following a nutritional diet and exercising regularly.

Above all else, fight the stigma that breast cancer is a woman?s disease. That is the first step in increasing awareness of the illness among black men.

FILE - In this Oct. 22, 2010 file photo, Jeff Hall holds a Neo Nazi flag while standing at Sycamore Highlands Park near his home in Riverside, Calif. On Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, the trial begins in juvenile court for the 10-year-old boy charged with murder for shooting Hall, his white supremacist father while he slept on the couch in 2010. The child told investigators he killed his father with a gun kept unlocked in the family's home because he was tired of his father beating him and his stepmother. (AP Photo/Sandy Huffaker, File)

(AP) ? Nearly two years after a neo-Nazi leader was shot at near point-blank range while sleeping on his sofa, his son ? who was 10 at the time of the killing ? went on trial Tuesday for murder.

The victim, Jeff Hall, was an out-of-work plumber who as regional leader of the National Socialist Movement headed rallies at a synagogue and a day labor site.

In opening statements in Juvenile Court, Riverside County prosecutor Michael Soccio said the now-12-year-old boy wanted to kill his father because of a history of domestic violence.

Soccio dismissed the notion that the neo-Nazi beliefs of Hall contributed to the son's penchant for violence, as the defense maintains.

"You'll learn that (the child) would have shot his father even if he'd been a member of the Peace and Freedom Party. It made no difference," he said.

Soccio said the boy told his younger sister the day before the May 2011 killing that he planned to shoot their father and she told him not to.

The boy saw an opportunity on the evening of the killing when his father came home from a party but was locked out and had to get in the house by crawling through a window, the prosecutor said. Hall fell asleep on the couch, and the boy got a gun and shot him while standing by his shoulder, Soccio said.

"He held the gun about a foot away and as he explained, he took four fingers and put them into the trigger and pulled the trigger back and the gun discharged," Soccio said, showing images of a bloodied victim on the couch covered by a blue blanket.

Defense attorney Matthew Hardy countered in his opening that his client had grown up in an abusive and violent environment that led him to believe it was good and right to kill people who were a threat to one's safety and the safety of one's family.

The boy's father taught him to shoot guns, took him to neo-Nazi rallies and once took him to the Mexican border to teach him how to protect his country from illegal immigrants, Hardy said.

"If you were going to create a monster, if you were going to create a killer, what would you do?" he said. "You'd put him in a house where there's domestic violence, child abuse, racism."

Hardy also alleged that the boy's stepmother Krista McCrary, who is expected to testify, manipulated the boy into killing Hall because Hall was going to leave her for another woman. Hall sent her text messages that night telling her he would divorce her and had left a party with another woman, Hardy said.

McCrary sat in on the child's interviews with police and psychiatrists after the shooting, he said, and she lied to investigators herself.

The prosecutor said previously that the boy's history included being expelled from school for violence at age 5, long before Hall became a neo-Nazi. The school violence included choking a teacher with a telephone cord.

The Associated Press is not identifying the boy ? who is not charged as an adult ? because of his age.

Hall, 32, who said he believed in a white breakaway nation, ran for a seat on the local water board in 2010 in a move that disturbed many residents in the recession-battered suburbs southeast of Los Angeles. The day before his death, he held a meeting of the neo-Nazi group at his home.

Last year, the boy ? the oldest of Hall's five children ? told investigators he went downstairs and shot his father before returning upstairs and hiding the gun under his bed, according to court documents. He told authorities he thought his father was going to leave his stepmother, and he didn't want the family to split up, Soccio said previously.

The boy's stepmother told authorities that Hall had hit, kicked and yelled at his son for being too loud or getting in the way. Hall and the boy's biological mother had previously slugged through a divorce and custody dispute in which each had accused the other of child abuse.

Kathleen M. Heide, a professor at the University of South Florida in Tampa who wrote "Why Kids Kill Parents," said children 10 and under rarely kill their parents and that only 16 such cases were documented between 1996 and 2007. Heide also said parenting and home life would undoubtedly play a role in the case.

"It would be inaccurate to say who the child's parents are is superfluous," she said. "That is going to have an effect on how the child grows up, on the values that child learns, on problem solving abilities, so all of that is relevant."

If a judge finds the boy murdered Hall, he could be held in state custody until he is 23 years old, said Bill Sessa, spokesman for California's Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The state currently houses fewer than 900 juveniles.

"We don't have anybody that young," Sessa said. "We have had 12-year-olds in the past, but it's rare."

Rowdy fans take to streets after Giants' victory

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The city of San Francisco cleaned up Monday after a rowdy World Series celebration turned violent in some neighborhoods and police arrested three dozen people.

The majority of arrests occurred in the Mission District, and included two people on gun charges, police Sgt. Michael Andraychak said.

"There were celebrations all over the city, and they were all peaceful and upbeat," Andraychak said. "Unfortunately, as the night progressed, this other element emerged and were intent on doing violence."

Bonfires of trash were lit in several intersections around the city, and a public transit bus was torched. Windows of several businesses and vehicles were broken, including a news van.

Firefighters needed a police escort to douse a bonfire near the Giants' ball park. They also fought fires fueled by couches, news racks and other debris throughout the city.

Police said a damage report was not yet available.

Mayor Edwin Lee announced a ticker-tape parade would be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from Market Street to Civic Center Plaza.

A parade after the Giants won the series in 2010 drew hundreds of thousands of fans.

After the game ended Sunday, fans across the city left their televisions and rushed outside, greeting diners, bar patrons and other merrymakers Sunday night after the Giants defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-3 to sweep the Series for their second title in three years.

In the city's Polk Gulch neighborhood, hundreds of fans sprayed champagne, set of off firecrackers and blocked traffic for at least two hours after the game.

Several blocks away, police clad in riot gear looked on as revelers danced around Civic Center plaza where they had watched the game on a Jumbotron.

The thousands of fans assembled at the site exploded in a roar with the final out.

Anthony Yos, 10, hugged his brother Luciano Yos, 15, and the two danced in an embrace with their parents.

"This is the greatest thing," Anthony said with a smile that could go no wider. "The Giants are my favorite team."

Someone in the crowd launched fireworks a few minutes after the game. Strangers hugged strangers, and wine bottles and marijuana cigarettes were shared freely despite a heavy police presence.

"This is San Francisco, "said Laura Chu. "We know how to party."

Sara Vivas brought her 6-year-old daughter Briana Cepeda from Oakland to view the game and join the celebration. They were both clad head-to-toe in Giants garb.

"This is something she will remember forever," Sara said.

Magnitude 7.7 quake strikes off Canadian coast

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) ? A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the west coast of Canada, but there were no reports of major damage. Residents in parts of British Columbia were evacuated, but the province appeared to escape the biggest quake in Canada since 1949 largely unscathed.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the powerful temblor hit the Queen Charlotte Islands just after 8 p.m. local time Saturday at a depth of about 3 miles (5 kilometers) and was centered 96 miles (155 kilometers) south of Masset, British Columbia. It was felt across a wide area in British Columbia, both on its Pacific islands and on the mainland.

"It looks like the damage and the risk are at a very low level," said Shirley Bond, British Columbia's minister responsible for emergency management said. "We're certainly grateful."

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center lifted its tsunami advisory for Hawaii Sunday morning just before 4 a.m. local time, three hours after downgrading from a warning and less than six hours after the waves first hit the islands.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service canceled tsunami advisories for Canada, Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California.

Tsunami Warning Center officials said wave heights were diminishing in Hawaii, though swimmers and boaters should be careful of strong or unusual currents. The biggest waves ? about 5 feet (1.5 meters)high ? appeared to hit Maui.

There were no immediate reports of damage, though one person died in a fatal crash near a road that was closed because of the threat near Oahu's north shore.

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie said the state was lucky to avoid more severe surges.

"We're very, very grateful that we can go home tonight counting our blessings," Abercrombie said.

Dennis Sinnott of the Canadian Institute of Ocean Science said a 69-centimeter (27 inch) wave was recorded off Langara Island on the northeast tip of Haida Gwaii, formerly called the Queen Charlotte Islands. The islands are home to about 5,000 people, many of them members of the Haida aboriginal group. Another 55 centimeter (21 inch) wave hit Winter Harbour on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island.

Canada's largest earthquake since 1700 was an 8.1 magnitude quake on August 22, 1949 off the coast of British Columbia, according to the Canadian government's Natural Resources website. It occurred on the Queen Charlotte Fault in what the department called Canada's equivalent of the San Andreas Fault ? the boundary between the Pacific and North American plates that runs underwater along the west coast of the Haida Gwaii.

In 1970 a 7.4 magnitude quake struck south of the Haida Gwaii.

The USGS said the temblor shook the waters around British Columbia and was followed by a 5.8 magnitude aftershock after several minutes. Several other aftershocks were reported.

The quake struck 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Sandspit, British Columbia, on the Haida Gwaii archipelago. People in coastal areas were advised to move to higher ground.

Urs Thomas, operator of the Golden Spruce hotel in Port Clements said there was no warning before everything began moving inside and outside the hotel. He said it lasted about three minutes.

"It was a pretty good shock," Thomas, 59, said. "I looked at my boat outside. It was rocking. Everything was moving. My truck was moving."

After the initial jolt, Thomas began to check the hotel.

"The fixtures and everything were still swinging," he said. "I had some picture frames coming down."

Lenore Lawrence, a resident of Queen Charlotte City on the Haida Gwaii, said the quake was "definitely scary," adding she wondered if "this could be the big one." She said the shaking lasted more than a minute. While several things fell off her mantle and broke, she said damage in her home was minimal.

Many on the B.C. mainland said the same.

"I was sitting at my desk on my computer and everything just started to move. It was maybe 20 seconds," said Joan Girbav, manager of Pacific Inn in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. "It's very scary. I've lived here all my life and I've never felt that."

Residents rushed out of their homes in Tofino, British Columbia on Vancouver Island when the tsunami sirens sounded, but they were allowed to return about two hours after the quake.

In Hawaii, the tsunami warning spurred residents to stock up on essentials at gas stations and grocery stores and sent tourists in beachside hotels to higher floors in their buildings. Bus service into Waikiki was cut off an hour before the first waves, and police in downtown Honolulu shut down a Halloween block party. In Kauai, three schools used as evacuation centers quickly filled to capacity.

In Alaska, the initial wave or surge was recorded at 4 inches (10 centimeters), much smaller than forecast, said Jeremy Zidek, a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. The first wave hit Craig about two hours after the earthquake. Surges at other Alaska communities were later recorded at 6 inches (15 centimeters), while others were much smaller.
