Doctors grow new ear on cancer victim's arm | Hang The Bankers ...

Ear growing in arm

When Sherrie Walter lost her ear to cancer two years ago, she told herself she?d never be one of those survivors attaching a prosthetic ear every day.

?The concept of having to tape something to my skin every day didn?t feel like that was who I was,? the 42-year-old mother of two told ABC News. ?I could just see my kids running around with it, yelling, ?I have mommy?s ear!??

But doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore offered Walter a chance at a new ear ? a permanent one built from her own tissue.

The groundbreaking procedure, described as one of the most complicated ear constructions in the U.S., involves removing cartilage from the rib cage to form a new ear, which is then placed under the skin of the forearm to grow.

?It was under my arm for about four months,? Walter said. ?I just thought I was something from science fiction.?

This week, Walter received some of the finishing touches on her ear, with doctors sculpting and carving tissue to reposition it.

?Family and friends say it looks great,? Walter said. ?I?m not looking until the big reveal.?

Walter?s journey began in 2010, when a sore in her left ear was diagnosed as basal-cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer.

?My dermatologist looked at it for less than five minutes and said, ?You have cancer,?? Walter said.

In October 2012, Walter was told the cancer had spread to her ear canal. She went through a 16-hour procedure to have the entire ear, neck glands, lymph nodes tissue and part of her skull removed.

That?s when a team of doctors stepped in and told Walter she had options.

?I described to her how prosthetic ears have to be fixated somehow and sometimes fall off,? said Dr. Patrick Byrne, an associate professor in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. ?Sherrie?s skull bone had been removed, so the only way of attaching a prosthetic would be through tape and glue. We both agreed that wasn?t an option.?

Byrne, who pioneered the procedure, said most ear reconstruction uses facial and neck skin, but most of Walter?s skin had been removed from those areas.

Doctors opted to place the ear under the forearm.

?We?ve talked for years about finding the right patient, in terms of age and health and a good support system. Sherrie had all that,? Walter said.

In November 2011, Walter?s new ear was inserted under the surface of her forearm skin.

?We implanted the ear near the wrist and just let it live there so all the skin could grow,? Byrne said.

After four months, the ear was removed from her arm and re-attached to her head.

The entire process took 20 months.

Since the re-attachment in March, Byrne and his team have been working on the cosmetic aspect of the ear, fully matching it to her right ear.

?Her reveal will be in about a week, and that?s going to really be an amazing,? Byrne said.

For Walter, the reveal of her new ear is the opportunity to give other cancer survivors hope.

?I just want people to learn from the story and understand that they have options out there,? Walter said. ?Talking to your doctor and realizing you have options. Because honestly, anything is possible.?

GM recalling 40,859 cars for potential fuel leaks

(AP) ? General Motors Co. is recalling more than 40,000 cars sold in warm-weather states because a plastic part might crack and cause a fuel leak.

The company is recalling Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 sedans from the 2007 through 2009 model years and Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent SUVs and Saturn Ion sedans from the 2007 model year.

The recall affects vehicles sold or currently registered in Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada or Texas. Owners in Arkansas and Oklahoma also are included in the recall of the 2009 Cobalt and G5.

The vehicles have plastic parts connected to the fuel pump which could crack. If the crack gets large enough, fuel could leak out of the vehicle and cause a fire.

GM says there have been no reports of fires or injuries related to the defect. The company began investigating the issue in 2011 after a dealer reported fuel leaking from some vehicles.

GM says its warranty data indicates that the problem is far more common in warm-weather states. It will repair the vehicles for free in those states. Owners will be notified of the recall by mail.

But the company also plans to send letters to owners in other states offering a free repair within a limited time period if the parts are cracked. That offer is valid for 10 years or 120,000 miles from the date the vehicle was sold, spokesman Alan Adler said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced the recall on its Web site Saturday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Arnold Schwarzenegger says his wife, Maria Shriver, was told to "snap out of it" by her mother for her attempts to persuade him against running for California governor in 2003, a conversation that ultimately opened the door to his successful candidacy.

Eunice Shriver told her daughter that her husband would be "angry for the rest of his life" if she stopped his ambitions, Schwarzenegger writes in his new autobiography, "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story."

The former governor says in the book that he had decided against running to recall Gov. Gray Davis after his wife implored him not to for the sake of their family. Maria Shriver announced his decision to their four children.

But he writes that when Maria Shriver told her mother about her efforts to thwart Schwarzenegger's political ambitions, Eunice told her daughter that women in their family "always support the men when they want to do something." Schwarzenegger says he didn't know about the conversation at the time, but learned of it later.

Maria Shriver then softened her stance, paving the way for Schwarzenegger to announce his candidacy on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," where he says he felt most comfortable.

The announcement came after a week of wavering. Schwarzenegger says before he headed to the TV appearance, his wife handed him two pieces of paper with talking points she had written: one in case he decided to run, another in case he decided not to.

He writes that Shriver went on to become a key ally and adviser to his campaign and eventual governorship.

Schwarzenegger has often said that Maria's mother and her father, Sargent Shriver, were essential to his eventual decision to seek public office, and the most "extraordinary human beings I've ever met." But he also writes in the book that he often teased his wife that the close-knit Democratic Kennedy clan was "like a bunch of clones" because there was such conformity among them.

A spokesman for Shriver, Matthew DiGirolamo, declined to comment on the contents of the book.

"Total Recall" will officially be published next week. The Associated Press purchased an early copy.

The book is part of an effort by the onetime "Mr. Universe" and Hollywood action star to rebrand himself after leaving office with a mixed record and subsequent embarrassing revelations about a fling he had with the family's housekeeper. Schwarzenegger, who fathered a son with the housekeeper, says he also let the boy down.

Schwarzenegger, 65, said he avoided telling his wife for years about the boy, who is now a teenager, even when Shriver asked him, partly because of his longtime penchant for secrecy, and his fear that the news would become public and undermine his political career. He told his wife in January 2011, when she confronted him the day after he left office.

In an interview with "60 Minutes" scheduled to air Sunday, Schwarzenegger said having sex with his housekeeper was "the stupidest thing" he ever did to his now-estranged wife and caused great pain to her and their four children. CBS aired excerpts of the interview Friday.

"I think it was the stupidest thing I've done in the whole relationship. It was terrible. I inflicted tremendous pain on Maria and unbelievable pain on the kids," Schwarzenegger tells "60 Minutes."

Schwarzenegger says he also let down the son he fathered with the housekeeper.

Shriver filed for divorce in July.

In his book, the usually ebullient Schwarzenegger admits to some loneliness, even though he packed his schedule with speeches, projects and movie-making after Shriver and the children moved out of the house. He said his career had been fun for 30 years because he shared it with Maria.

They had done everything together, he writes.

The former GOP governor also writes about a 2003 White House meeting with Karl Rove in which the top GOP strategist told him the recall would not happen and instead introduced the actor to then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice as his pick to run for California governor in 2006.

Schwarzenegger felt snubbed.

He asks, "How could Rove have been so wrong?"

Rove's office said he was traveling Friday and could not be reached for comment.

Rice's chief of staff at Stanford University, Georgia Godfrey, said Rice cannot recall "any conversation on this subject."

"She has stated many times in the past that she has no desire to run for public office and those sentiments have still not changed," Godfrey said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press.

Times Higher Education - Alumnus spurns PhD over plagiarism row

27 September 2012

Former student 'disgusted' at Leeds' decision not to uphold allegations. Paul Jump writes

A former University of Leeds doctoral student is seeking to "renounce" his degree after the institution decided not to uphold a charge of plagiarism against his former supervisor.

Vijay Parmar completed his PhD in mathematics at Leeds in 1991 under the supervision of John Wood, who is now professor of pure mathematics at the institution.

Dr Parmar told Times Higher Education that he had lost interest in publishing his ideas after taking up a career in investment banking.

However, in May 2011 he became aware of a paper published in 2009 in the Bulletin Math?matique which, in his estimation, took its main concept and notation from his thesis without acknowledgement.

The paper was co-authored by Professor Wood and Paul Baird, who was a research fellow at Leeds while Dr Parmar was there and is now professor of mathematics at the University of Bretagne Occidentale.

In an email to Dr Parmar, Professor Wood acknowledged some "overlap" between the paper and his thesis and apologised for not citing it. But he denied consciously using Dr Parmar's ideas, adding that "the problem is that most theses are not readily available, so that it is not usual to cite them in papers".

Dr Parmar dismissed the explanation and asked Leeds and Bretagne to conduct plagiarism inquiries.

Leeds' screening panel concluded in March 2012 that an apology should be issued and an addendum be added to the disputed article acknowledging the priority of Dr Parmar's thesis. It denied that Professor Wood's assertion about the acknowledgement of theses was "a fair representation of good academic practice".

But it agreed with the verdict of its expert adviser, Robert Bryant, professor of mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, that, given the lapse of time, it was "believable" that the paper's authors "might not have consciously remembered (Dr Parmar's) work but were still influenced by it".

Dr Parmar noted in his appeal that professors Wood and Baird had cited his thesis in a 2003 book. In his official response, David Hogg, pro vice-chancellor for research and innovation at Leeds, accepted this made it "a little less likely" that they had forgotten the thesis by 2009, but said their explanation remained "credible".

Dr Parmar was "disgusted" with this verdict and has asked to "resign" both his PhD and a prior BSc. The university said there was no procedure for doing so but that he could be removed from its list of alumni.

A Leeds spokeswoman said the allegation had "been handled fully and fairly, in accordance with university procedures". She said the addendum had already been published and that, since the rejection of his appeal, Dr Parmar had "refused the opportunity to meet with university representatives to discuss his concerns".

Dr Parmar dismissed the addendum, saying its wording implied his thesis was "just one of many insignificant references - not the central idea underpinning the paper". He said he was contemplating legal action if the paper was not retracted.

Bretagne Occidentale's president, Pascal Olivard, wrote to Dr Parmar last July saying only that an "impartial" committee had concluded that his allegations were "devoid of any foundation". Dr Parmar described the brief letter as "pathetic". A spokeswoman for Bretagne told THE that it had nothing to add.

Matrix One drops to $60, moves from impulse purchase to disposable tablet

Matrix One drops to $60

Well, the Matrix One isn't becoming any more attractive spec-wise as the days pass, but Direct Merchandise Marketing believes they can keep up with the low-priced big boys by under-cutting them even further. If a $90 retail sticker wasn't enough to convince you that the A8-powered ICS slab deserved your attention, maybe a drop to $60 will change your tune. The 7-inch WVGA tablet is now an impressively thrifty $59.99, though, after tax and shipping the total tops $70. Still, its impossible to deny its bargain value.

Alanis Morissette Makes the Political Personal on New Album ...

Alanis Morissette

Ernesto Ruscio/Redferns via Getty Images

September 26, 2012 3:50 PM ET

Releasing a new album is more than a good reason for Alanis Morissette to go on tour: she also enjoys the conversations new work can spark, particularly the ones she's having about Havoc and Bright Lights, her latest.?"I thought they would wind up being exciting, but it's taken the philosopher in me to a whole different level," she told?Rolling Stone?during a 45-minute call with reporters yesterday. "So answering questions about this record, I feel like I'm in my ideal, dream-come-true seat, because I get to have a little bit of social commentary, and I'm doing it in real-time."

What Morissette has learned from talking to listeners is that they are still primarily interested in how her songs relate to their own lives. "No matter how political or psychological the Q&As get, the questions always come back to relationships and most importantly, romantic ones," she said. "So it's the revaluation and re-definition, frankly, of marriage and commitment and why commitment yields healing and how art is cathartic in and of itself but it doesn't create healing. That healing comes from commitment, deep intimacy and the long term diving into relationships, especially when it's hard."

Those are themes the singer explored when writing?Havoc and Bright Lights. "I think it speaks to how much braver I am to delve into a deeper intimacy in my relationships, the one with my son, with my husband, even to the point where I'd be ready to get married," she said of the new record. "Intimacy was always terrifying for me, so intimacy with spirit, other people, friends, even professional colleagues. So it's a relationship record even more so than ever before."

Morissette also address several big-picture topics, delving into feminism on "Woman Down," for example. It's a meaningful topic for the singer.

"There really is, for me anyway, no better time to be alive as a woman than 2012," she said. "We went through the women's movement, which was an important movement, we became empowered, but in an individualistic, autonomous kind of way. Neither style, neither approach afforded any kind of connection or intimacy. And now we're slowly segueing into this gorgeous era where we're empowered but we also have the knowledge that interdependence can afford this connection within and connection with other people."

"Woman Down" is already among Morissette's favorite new songs to perform?? in fact, the tune is the first song on the set list for a North American tour that kicked off Monday in San Diego.?"We change the set list a lot because we have the luxury of being able to do that," she said, noting that she focuses on the new album and includes "a bit of an acoustic set" toward the end of the show. "My bandmates and I want to keep ourselves on our toes," Morissette said, resulting in what she called a "super intimate" concert in San Diego.?

Building a set from 17 years' worth of material is partly an exercise in consensus among the musicians, the singer said. "I'll sit around with my bandmates and I look to them a lot and say 'What songs are you loving and missing harmonically?'" Morissette also takes care to cover the full range of emotions that occur in her music. "I want to make sure that I touch on enough aspects of my own humanity that it's a varied show. I'm going to keep it positive, challenging, exaltative, harrowing and have it all come forth ? angry, happy, blissed out, infatuated, pissed off."

4 high schoolers held over alleged sexual hazing

By NBC News staff and wire reports

LOS ANGELES -- Four Los Angeles-area high school students have been arrested in an investigation into complaints that varsity soccer players sexually abused younger team members in hazing rituals that victims said were conducted with the complicity of a coach.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department opened an investigation at the request of the school district after a parent of one boy who claimed to have been harassed by teammates came forward to lodge a complaint, school officials said.

In a statement on the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District's website, its superintendent Barbara Nakaoka said she shared people's "shock and sadness."

"Our school community faces the tragic allegation that student-to-student hazing was taking place between members of a sports team at La Puente High School. The allegations are deeply concerning, and they have understandably caused tremendous anxiety and anger among students and parents," she said.

Comparisons to Penn State 'unfounded'
Nakaoka said the media had been "aggressively covering the story" amid comparisons with events at Penn State, where assistant football coach Jerry?Sandusky abused boys both on and off campus. In June, Sandusky was convicted of 45 offenses.

"I cannot allow this comparison to go unchallenged; if I were to let these unfounded comments go unchecked, then I would be indirectly telling students that their voices are not heard," she said.

A statement issued on Monday by the sheriff's department special victims bureau said more than 70 students at La Puente High School have been interviewed about allegations of hazing, and that four were arrested and released to the custody of their parents.

"The hazing incidents have gone on for several years and may have risen to the level of a crime," sheriff's Sergeant Al Fraijo said.

"At this point, there is no information to indicate that any member of faculty or coaching staff were directly involved," he added.

Sandusky victim sues Penn State for 'shameful' handling of complaints

But a lawyer representing the families of four boys who claim they were victimized said the hazing and assaults were carried out by team members against younger fellow players "at the behest and encouragement" of a coach.

The attorney, Brian Claypool, said the coach "lured young boys to a back room to facilitate varsity members of the team sexually assaulting the boys by attempting to sodomize them with a foreign object."

The attorney representing the four alleged hazing victims has now hired a clinical psychologist to help them cope with what they say is sexual assault, NBCLosAngeles.com reported.

"This is not hazing, this is a sexual assault. These boys when I saw them were in serious trauma. I did a suicide assessment on one of them," psychologist Michelle Golland said according to NBCLosAngeles.com, adding that the alleged victims were going through something akin to post-traumatic stress disorder.

"PTSD untreated will go into serious anxiety, serious depression. All of the families involved, they all need therapy as well, because they are in this vortex of trauma," Golland said.

One of the alleged victims, named as "John," told the Dr. Drew Show on cable channel HLN that six or seven people had thrown him to the floor and were "beating on me" in one incident.

The Los Angeles Times and other media reported on Tuesday that a coach, who has not been identified, has been placed on administrative leave.

Claypool also said the hazing occurred next to a coach's office, and that "the school knew or should have known that these horrific acts were being carried out on school grounds."

He accused school officials of "attempting to cover up the ongoing hazing incidents," and said he planned to file suit against the high school and the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District.?

Foundation works to find common links in cancer between dogs ...

The relationship between man and dog dates back before recorded history. And now there?s a medical relationship to consider.

We share a lot in common. We?re both pack animals, we both hunt, love to play and, unfortunately, we both suffer the same types of cancer.

?Dogs get breast cancer, brain cancer, lymphoma and melanoma. So, 2 million dogs, our foundation, our charter mission is, why?? Pondering that question is founder of 2 million dogs Luke Robinson.

The relatively new study of canine cancer as it relates to humans is called comparative oncology. ?To try to discover that common link in cancer between pets and people,? says Robinson.

2 million dogs founder Luke Robinson says studying this mysterious connection will benefit both man and dog. ?I truly believe that dogs, our canine counter parts, hold the key to the mystery of cancer.?

Breast cancer survivor Wendy England says her dog Daisy, a Rottweiler and Sheppard mix, was aware of Wendy?s cancer before Wendy was diagnosed.

?On the side I had my tumor Daisy would flail and pull away. But on the side that I didn?t, nothing. And I consistently did that until I had my surgery.?

After surgery, Daisy showed no reaction whatsoever to Wendy and Wendy knew she was cancer free. Her doctor confirmed that at a later exam.

?I think they, (dogs), hold the key. And in all respects dogs, we know, can sense cancer in humans. It makes absolute sense,? said Robinson. Robinson hopes to someday unlock this medical mystery between dog, and his best friend, man.

Could Disney be the new Netflix? | Digital Trends

Forget Apple and Amazon: The new Netflix might come from the House of Mouse, with one analyst suggesting that Disney is already well-placed to launch a streaming video-on-demand service to take the SVOD crown.

For years, a question on many people?s lips in the entertainment industry has been ?Who is going to manage to take on Netflix and win?? The list of companies that many hoped would be able to manage to not only get a foothold in the increasingly-lucrative Video on Demand market, but manage to turn that foothold into something much more longterm and permanent, has been long throughout the years, from big names to Apple and Amazon to less obvious suggestions like Walmart and Blockbuster. According to one new report, however, we?ve all been overlooking a major media player who might even have the infrastructure in place to move into the market already: The Walt Disney Company.

Todd Juenger, a business analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein, believes that the only thing keeping Disney from being a major force in streaming content at this point is lack of desire. Describing the possibility for Disney to move into the area as a ?hidden treasure,? Juenger wrote in a report to investors that ?the time is ripe for Disney to re-imagine their sleepy SVOD service (Disney Family Movies) into a full-blown, premium Disney-branded SVOD service.?

For those unfamiliar with Disney Family Movies ? I suspect that may be all of you who don?t have children ? it?s a streaming video service that describes itself as ?a subscription video on demand service for one very low monthly price: great feature movies, shorts, featurettes and bonus materials, at your fingertips.? In other words, the chance to see everything you?d get on a Disney DVD ? including the special features, unusually for a streaming service offering ? as an On-Demand offering from major television and cable providers (Instead of being available online, potential users are directed to contact their carriers to find out if the service is available for them).

The problem with Juenger?s prediction is that Disney?s offerings are currently tied up in a deal with Starz, which in turn makes their movies available to other VoD services, including Netflix. He has a simple solution to this problem: Break the Starz deal. ?Full realization would likely require abandoning the Starz output deal,? he admitted in his report, adding that the potential earnings from a revitalized Disney Family Movies offering ?would be easily superior? to the income the company sees from the current licensing deal. ?At 12 million [subscriptions], DFM would add $475 million incremental operating income,? he explained.

The suggestion is a fascinating one, not least of all because it actually makes a fair amount of sense. Disney hasn?t made any noises about being concerned about this kind of plan in the past, but Disney Family Movies does provide an existing framework to build from, and with a bank of content that not only includes the animated Disney movies, but also ABC television content, Marvel Studios and Pixar, there?s a lot of reason for customers to sign up to such a service. Maybe it?s not such a crazy idea, after all.

The Drop in Property Taxes that Never Happened ? Eye on Housing

Property taxes are an important source of revenue for state and local governments to finance services, particularly education.

Some analysts expected large declines in property tax collections for state and local governments in the wake of the Great Recession. However, this drop has never happened, despite historic price declines for owner-occupied housing. In fact, recent data demonstrate that property tax collections have remained constant for about three years, leading to higher effective tax rates on homeowners.

According to the latest data from the Census Bureau, over a one-year period spanning the?third quarter of 2011 to the second quarter of 2012, approximately $475 billion of tax was paid by property owners.

As state/local income and corporate tax receipts recovered in recent years, ?the share of local tax collections due to property taxes fell from ahistorical recession highs. However, according to the most recent data, the share may have stabilized above historical levels.

The average share for property taxes since 2000 is 32%, while the current share stands at 34.1%. Consequently, housing and other real estate owners are still paying a higher than average percentage of state and local government tax receipts.

This elevated tax burden is significant, especially when one considers the decline in housing prices since 2006 ? a decline that has led many to incorrectly conclude that property tax payments have also significantly fallen. According to the Case-Shiller national house price index, housing prices are down a little more than 31% over the last 5 years.Yet the decline of property taxes paid from the peak is negligible thus far (0.35%). This means that the effective tax homeowners pay on their homes remains high.?

There are several reasons why property taxes have not dropped with housing values. First, assessments of value tend to lag. Second, property tax authorities can adjust tax rates (such as millage rates in?many jurisdictions) thus increasing rates as property values decline, holding receipts approximately constant. However, such policy actions mean the effective rate of tax (taxes paid divided by the property value) on the property? increases.

Taxes paid by homeowners and other real estate owners remain the largest single source of taxes for state and local governments. At 34%, property taxes represent a significantly larger share than the next largest sources: individual income taxes (22%) and sales taxes (21%).

* Data footnote: Census data for property tax collections include taxes paid for all real estate assets (as well as personal property), including owner-occupied homes, rental housing, commercial real estate, and agriculture. However, housing?s share is by far the largest when considering the stock of both owner-occupied and rental housing units.

EPL referee reports Twitter cancer abuse to police

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:13 p.m. ET Sept. 24, 2012

LONDON (AP) -Premier League referee Mark Halsey has asked police to investigate abusive comments about him on Twitter after officiating in the heated match between Liverpool and Manchester United.

The insulting online messages on Monday referenced Halsey's battle with throat cancer in 2009.

Halsey made two contentious decisions in United's 2-1 victory at Anfield on Sunday that went in favor of the visitors.

Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey was sent off in the first half for a challenge on Jonny Evans, and United was later awarded a penalty kick that was scored by Robin van Persie.

Halsey returned to refereeing in March 2010 following his cancer battle.

No Premier League referees have Twitter accounts, according to the body that oversees match officials in England.

Miami Accountants Who Deal With Business Owners Can Find it ...

CPA Miami, Miami CPA,Accountant Miami,Miami Accountant

Business owners sometimes create a great deal of wealth for themselves and their families, so it?s understandable that many Miami Accountants seek them out as clients. But current and former business owners are often not the easiest, most cooperative clients. Some can be independent to the point of prickliness, others may be sure that they know best and often need substantial persuasion before agreeing to take a Miami Accountant professional advice.

They?re a control-oriented group, very successful and used to calling the shots. They?ve done something well, and they kind of can?t get over it. If they wanted to do it all themselves, that?s an option, but instead they come to argue with you.

Not every Miami Accounting Service wants to have that argument. For those who aren?t thrown by their quirks, however, business owners can be excellent clients ? particularly for Miami Accountants who know what to expect and have considered how they?ll handle the challenges that business-owner clients can present.

THE DEMOGRAPHICS

Business owners who want financial planning advice are in varying stages of life. Some are younger, some are getting on in years, some have sold their businesses or are looking to sell their businesses.

Business sellers tend to be middle-aged and older, though there are clients who are in there twenties and is being courted by a bigger company that wants to buy there firm for $4million or so. Every once in a while you come across some young kid who had an idea and really hit it out of the park.

Most business owners are men and are very accustomed to being in control, Miami Accountants say. Men start with control issues already, and businessmen have a second layer on top of that. A successful business owner feels like he needs to be in control because that?s how he?s built his firm and how he?s succeeded.

That need for control may make it more difficult for a business owner to take advice, even advice that he?s actively sought out. Some business-owner clients want Miami Accountants to operate the client?s way. Others may accept help, but only after substantial ? sometimes numerical ? proof that the Miami Accounting Service?s methods will bear fruit.

You get a little push-back from this population. We had a guy who had been sold a lot of insurance products and had misconceptions about them. He thought they had guarantees that they didn?t have. We suggested he make changes, and he really needed proof on why he should consider making changes. This approach, she adds, can make it difficult for Miami Accountants to feel as if they are developing a warm, trusting relationship with these clients.

At the outset, some business owners are ready to begin the financial planning process, while others are consumed with the process of selling their businesses. Both groups may be courted by Miami Accountants all interested in increasing assets under management by helping clients reinvest business sale proceeds.

Every financial Miami Accounting Service on the planet is looking for money in motion. As soon as it becomes common knowledge that a business owner is selling, you see the sharks circling, waiting for the sale to happen and to pitch the owner on what to do with the money. That, too, can make it difficult for an advisor to develop a client relationship with current or recent business owners.

ORCHESTRATING A SALE

Miami Accountants manage many of these challenges, they says, by getting involved with business owners long before they actively pursue a sale. His firm is in partnerships with CPAs around the country, many of whom refer business-owner clients, especially those older than 50.

They may have no intention of selling, but it?s something we want to get them thinking about. We educate them about exit strategy options and all the issues that come with a sale.

We want to show you the way well before you ever think about selling, because once you think about selling, chances are you?ll work with us because we?ve already put the plan together. Then who will get the assets? The Merrill Lynch guy who shows up once you have a check in your pocket, or the guys who walked you through an entire process that began five years ago??

Business owners may talk about a life of relaxation, but relatively few occupy hammocks for long. Instead, they often start another business or invest in one. And though they may put substantial sums into new ventures, former owners typically want help as they create personal financial plans. Their demeanor, however, may suggest that they?re not eager for Miami Accounting Service input.

Some owners rule firms with an iron fist. This group often includes older business owners with relatively simple companies, especially in industrial fields. Unlike owners who build teams and delegate jobs, these executives have typically succeeded by relying on their own opinions and ways of accomplishing tasks. As a result, they?re slow to take advice.

VieraCPA counsels patience as Miami Accountants earn these clients? trust. ?It helps to be very patient, listen for a long time first and understand that they?re not going to give up control,? VieraCPA says. ?They trust themselves very, very strongly. They may not readily accept that they?re wrong.?

Such business owners often respect credentials suggesting that a Miami Accounting Service is an expert, including advanced degrees, book authorship and appearances in publications they respect. References from friends and other legal and financial professionals help too. ?You may get more of their ear if you can give good business advice,? VieraCPA says. ?That will give you a lot more credibility.?

So can a willingness to do things their way or a combination of your way and theirs. Schroeder recalls a business-owner client he had early in his career.

?There started to be some dips in the market, and he started calling and saying, ?I think we should do this, I think we should do that,? not because he didn?t feel comfortable risking money, but because he felt out of control. I worked with him as well as I could, having frequent lunches to explain that managing investments is not like managing a business, that active management usually works against you.?

Ultimately, though, the client left Schroeder?s practice. Schroeder approaches similar clients differently now.

?I don?t force them into an entirely passive investment strategy,? he says. ?We either keep part of their money separate and let them invest it in business ventures, or let them keep and run an unmanaged account.?

Those clients still benefit from a Miami Accounting Service?s expertise. ?We execute the trades, so they get cheaper transaction fees and we can pass along research and keep track of the overall portfolio,? Schroeder says.

DIVERSIFYING HOLDINGS

Strong confidence in themselves and their companies is a fine thing when a business owner is still at the helm, but it can be a stumbling point when it?s time to diversify stock holdings.

?We see people who aren?t the owners but are in the C-suite in a public company, and it can be awful to get that firm?s stock away from them,? VieaCPA says. ?One client was high up in a regional bank, and we only persuaded him to diversify his holdings after his first $1 million loss. His CPA had told him to diversify for years, but he was worried about capital gains. Now he doesn?t have a capital gains problem. He has a capital loss to carry forward.

Viera handles this issue by treating diversification and outside management as separate concerns. ?You can still persuade someone to diversify the money they manage themselves,? he says. ?Or you can try to diversify some of the holdings. Don?t try to wrest everything away.?

?We let them make all the decisions and involve them in every part of the process,? Thompson says. ?A lot of business owners are natural Miami Accountants. If you go through the process properly, the choice of investments is much easier. It?s funneled down to what actually meets their goals, and they?ve been engaged in the process the entire way.?

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS

Many Miami Accountants say they particularly enjoy getting to know their clients and forming warm, trusting relationships. It often is quite time consuming.

?I saw a prospect yesterday who has been here for three meetings,? Viera says. ?He?s young, very successful and thinks he wants financial planning help. He grilled us and grilled us, analyzing and processing everything. That?s who he is. He doesn?t mean to be unpleasant.?

This is typical of her business-owner clients, Viera says. ?They want to see the evidence, they want to see the facts. They?re not as interested in the personal, and that makes it more difficult to establish a relationship.?

Keeping this group?s expectations and preferences in mind can help a relationship grow more quickly. For starters, be responsive, many advise. ?This isn?t the population you leave sitting in your waiting room while you finish a phone call,? Viera says. ?They?re used to special treatment, lots of ?yes,? things being ready for them.?

Take an interest in their business lives, she suggests. ?They like it if there?s some synergy,? Viera says. If you?ve seen other people in the same field, show that you know something about the industry. Ask questions. ?They love talking about their own business, and you?ll learn things you can show to the next person,? Viera says.

Expect that it will take more time than usual for these clients to reveal some personal matters. ?I have a client who is a very successful business owner, and his wife had a large inheritance and has her money somewhere else. I didn?t know that until I?d known him for about a year,? Viera says.

In the end, it?s not possible to build a successful relationship with every business-owner client. ?I have a client now who is an elderly man, still working,? Viera says. ?He and his wife have both called and yelled at members of my staff. They?re lovely to me, but if you?re yelling at my staff, then it isn?t working.?

Ultimately, she adds, ?If you have someone who isn?t going to be pleasant to work with, then you don?t need to work with them.?

Yankees win thriller, beat A's on error in 14th

NEW YORK (AP) ? Raul Ibanez hit his second home run of the game during a startling rally in the 13th inning, then the New York Yankees won a thriller when first baseman Brandon Moss' two-out error in the 14th lifted them over the Oakland Athletics 10-9 Saturday.

The AL East leaders came back to hold their one-game edge over Baltimore. Down 9-5 in the 13th, the Yankees won for just the second time in team history after trailing by at least four runs in extra innings.

Oakland began the day with a 3 1-2 game lead over Los Angeles for the second AL wild-card spot. The A's still have an edge, but blew a huge opportunity and lost for the fifth time in six games.

Moments after pinch runner Melky Mesa ? in his big league debut ? missed third base and had to retreat, the Yankees found another way to win. Moss let a bases-loaded grounder by Eduardo Nunez skip off his glove, allowing Ichiro Suzuki score and ending a game that took 5 hours, 43 minutes.

Johnny Gomes, Yoenis Cespedes and Chris Carter homered in the 13th, putting the A's ahead. New York rallied in the bottom half, scoring runs on a wild pitch and Nunez's sacrifice fly before Ibanez hit a tying, two-run drive off Pat Neshek.

In a game that included a bruising hit at home plate, stellar defensive plays and even a bit of rain, the Yankees got a bit of luck to outlast the A's.

Eric Chavez led off the 14th with a single against Tyson Ross (2-10) and Mesa pinch ran. Derek Jeter sacrificed and Suzuki was walked intentionally, bringing up Alex Rodriguez.

Rodriguez singled to center, and the Yankees erupted in the dugout, sensing they had won. But Mesa stepped over third base, had to retrace a few steps and was held up.

Robinson Cano followed with a bouncer between the mound and first base. Ross lunged for the ball, spun and threw home for a forceout.

That left it up to Nunez, and he sliced a grounder toward first base. Moss slid over and was in position to make the play, but the ball bounced off his mitt and skittered away for Oakland's third error of the game.

Several of Mesa's teammates were able to laugh about the rookie's misstep after it was over, and they kidded with him as they walked off the field.

Cory Wade (1-1) pitched the 14th for the win.

Seldom-used Yankees first baseman Steve Pearce made a diving catch of a vicious line drive with the bases loaded to end the 11th inning. Oakland catcher Derek Norris withstood a violent collision with Ibanez and held onto the ball in the 12th.

All in all, it was quite a contrast to their game Friday night, when Russell Martin's solo homer in the bottom of the ninth sent the Yankees over the A's 2-1.

Gomes hit a two-run homer in the 13th that put the A's ahead. Cespedes and Carter also connected, but New York came back against an Oakland bullpen that had allowed just one run in 10 previous innings.

Ibanez had a pinch-hit homer in the fifth, ending his 0-for-18 skid and giving the Yankees a 5-4 lead.

Stephen Drew, Seth Smith and Cespedes led off the game with three straight doubles for a 2-0 lead. Suzuki then lined a one-out homer in the bottom half for his 12th hit in 16 at-bats.

NOTES: MLB made a scoring change that took a double away from Cano on Sept. 15 against Tampa Bay. Rays CF B.J. Upton will be charged with an error on Cano's ball in the eighth inning. ... A's OF Coco Crisp was out again with an eye allergy. Manager Bob Melvin says he is close but is not sure if Crisp will play this weekend. ... New York 1B Mark Teixeira took ground balls, did light jogging and took batting practice and will fly to Tampa, Fla., on Sunday to work out at the Yankees' complex. But he is still not sure when he'll be able to return. Teixeira has played just once since Aug. 27, reinjuring the calf on Sept. 8. ... Jeter extended his hitting streak to a season-high 16 with a single in the sixth.
