Intra-aortic balloon pumps do not reduce infarct size in patients with STEMI without cardiac shock

Intra-aortic balloon pump counterpulsation prior to PCI in patients with ST segment elevation MI does not reduce infarct size as measured by MRI, according to results from the Counterpulsation Reduces Infarct Size Acute Myocardial Infarction (CRISP AMI) trial.

Intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation is a procedure in which a balloon inserted in the aorta is timed to inflate at the start of diastole and to deflate before the start of systole. This increases diastolic pressure, which increases coronary perfusion and oxygen delivery to the myocardium, and facilitates ejection of blood from the left ventricle. There is evidence that LV unloading before reperfusion can reduce the extent of the infarct; infarct size has been shown to predict LV function after AMI.

Principal investigator Dr Manesh Patel from the Duke Clinical Research Institute of Duke University, Durham, USA, explained: "Animal studies had suggested that inserting a balloon pump before opening the vessel would reduce the heart's workload and, by doing so, could potentially reduce infarct size. However, having tested this observation in humans, we did not show similar results."

CRISP AMI was a multicentre, prospective, randomised trial in patients with acute ST segment elevation MI without shock. They were recruited within six hours of chest pain onset and planned primary PCI. Of the 337 patients enrolled, 161 were randomised to receive intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation (IABC) prior to primary PCI, and 176 to standard care (SOC, primary PCI without IABC support).

The primary efficacy endpoint of the trial was infarct size measured by cardiac MRI at 3-5 days post-PCI. The secondary clinical endpoint was the composite of major adverse clinical events including death, reinfarction, and heart failure at six months.

Results showed that mean infarct size was not significantly different between the IABC and SOC groups (42.1% vs. 37.5%, representing the percentage of left ventricle affected). At 30 days, major bleeding or transfusion had occurred in five (3.1%) of IABC patients and three (1.7%) of SOC patients. Major vascular complications occurred in seven IABC (4.3%) and two SOC (1.1%) patients. By six months, death had occurred in three (1.9%) of the IABC and nine (5.2%) of the SOC group.

While the study did not meet its primary endpoint, and was not powered to draw significant conclusions on clinical events, Dr Patel says the results nevertheless offer an insight into the treatment of STEMI patients. "The most striking observation is the excellent overall outcome for the highest risk patients within the context of this trial," he says. "The IABC group had less than 5% mortality, and it's difficult to improve that. We've become very good at treating AMI patients." In the USA acute mortality risk in AMI is between 6% and 15%; one-year mortality is estimated at 38% for women and 25% for men.

Dr Patel adds that 15 of the patients in the SOC group crossed over to receive IABC, and five patients crossed over prior to PCI and ten patients after PCI. "While this trial shows that the routine use of IABC cannot be recommended in STEMI, physicians should be vigilant about identifying those patients who are at risk for rapid deterioration and may benefit from counterpulsation," he says.

YC-Funded Launchpad Toys Looks To Create The Next Generation Of Early Learning Toys

LaunchpadToys-LogoAssumptions are rarely safe. But I'm sure most of you will come with me when I go out on a limb to say that, by and large, kids love toys. Yep. And they also love cartoons. This has been true as long as either have been around, however, a more recent taste to trend among the world's wee ones: Love for the iPad. Some even said it was the toy of the year in 2010. A new startup from Y Combinator's gigantic summer batch of 63 companies launching today, called Launchpad Toys, agrees that tablets are an incredibly effective educational tool for kids.

Venture Capital Goes Behind the Web ? HispanicBusiness.com ...

Silicon Valley?s largest venture capital firms are raising their stakes in so-called enterprise companies, which provide behind-the- scene services like software and analytics to business customers. While the spotlight in the latest technology boom has been trained on a cluster of popular consumer applications like Facebook, Groupon and Zynga, investors are increasingly taking a shine to the startups that build the infrastructure for those Internet powerhouses. Silicon Valley?s largest venture capital firms are raising their stakes in so-called enterprise companies, which provide software, analytics and other services to business customers. They are betting that the emerging players in this space, typically considered the least sexy part of technology, will siphon market share from lumbering giants like Oracle, Microsoft and SAP. ?There?s a manifest destiny, and the old guard is slowly being shunted aside, as start-ups eat their lunch,? said Scott Weiss, a partner at Andreessen Horowitz, a venture capital firm whose portfolio includes enterprise players like Box, a data storage service, and Asana, a software maker. The technological and cultural gap between the giants and the start-ups is vast. Enterprise services have commonly featured costly, multiyear licensing agreements, installed software and in- house solutions. But the old model is eroding, disrupted by a new group of Web-based companies that offer their products remotely, through what is known as the cloud. As Internet use explodes, more companies are looking for low- cost solutions that can be installed immediately and scaled up or down rapidly. Access to cloud-based services can be gained by any employee through the Web, and data use is not restricted by the number of on-site servers. and the services are often less expensive because their charges are based on use, rather than the number of licenses. ?Historically, a company may buy some heavyweight software from SAP, put it on an Oracle database and use EMC?s servers,? said Ping Li, of Accel Partners, a venture capital firm. ?But you look at Google, Facebook, they don?t have that stuff ? they need tools with more scale, more flexibility.? Mr. Weiss points to his firm?s investment portfolio. Of about 60 consumer and business-related companies, including Groupon, Twitter and Zynga, not one is a customer of the enterprise giant Oracle. Instead of huge sales forces, the enterprise start-ups often rely on word-of-mouth marketing and free trials to lure customers. Atlassian, a software development and collaboration tool, hit $100 million in revenue without hiring a single salesperson. last year, the company picked up $60 million from Accel ? the venture firm?s largest software investment. ?We are instantly one to many on the Web,? said Jay Simons, Atlassian?s president. The strategic shift is expected to lead to mergers and acquisitions, as the older players, like Microsoft, Oracle and SAP, face pressure. so far this year, enterprise deal-making has risen 82.7 percent in value, to $20 billion, accounting for 14.5 percent of all technology deals ? the highest level since 2003, according to data from Thomson Reuters. In Silicon Valley, the competition for start-ups is also intensifying. last Thursday, Andreessen Horowitz announced it had led a $15 million investment round in GoodData, a Web-based business analytics platform. Earlier this week, Wanova, a desktop management service, raised $10 million and Pure Storage, a maker of high- capacity storage drives, raised $30 million. ?In the next couple of years, our focus on enterprise will increase,? said Ted Schlein, a partner at the venture firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, noting that valuations in the area had jumped about 30 percent in the last year. Accel, one of the earliest investors in Facebook, is also ?focusing much more on these ?consumerized? software services,? according to a partner, Richard Wong. GoodData?s chief executive, Roman Stanek, said he had held discussions with 12 venture firms for his latest financing round. In the end, six competed aggressively, before Stanek picked Andreessen Horowitz. ?Enterprise tends to move at a glacial pace,? said Stanek, a veteran entrepreneur who has previously sold two software businesses. ?But the consolidation of the industry is accelerating, and the segmentation is becoming more obvious.? Still, these startups face significant challenges on the way to becoming the next Oracle. Adoption can be slow, since corporations often hesitate to reconfigure big chunks of their technology infrastructure. some have to get over the psychological hurdle of trusting everything to the cloud. As Web-based applications become more robust and reliable, confidence goes up, but services are not bulletproof. Earlier this month, Amazon?s Web Services suffered two failures, which momentarily crippled Internet businesses like Netflix and Foursquare. Despite the hiccups, venture capital backers say they remain confident in this next generation of enterprise names, seeing them as part of a natural development of the Web. as they see it, they are also prime targets for the aging giants or more established upstarts like Salesforce, a $15 billion software company built during the last dot-com boom, and VMware, which has made several cloud-centric purchases this year, including SlideRocket and Socialcast. Like their consumer peers, these start-ups are finding the public markets welcoming. Jive Software, a company backed by Kleiner Perkins, filed to go public late Wednesday. ?In the venture world, we talk a lot about the leading trends in social and mobile but underneath the consumer-facing side, foundational elements are also shifting,? mr. Wong said. ?The new enterprise companies are the picks and shovels that sit behind these consumer startups.?

California beats Japan 2-1 to take LLWS (AP)

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. ? California returned the Little League World Series to the United States with the type of victory even the big leaguers dream about.

Nick Pratto singled in the winning run with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of sixth inning to give the boys from Huntington Beach a 2-1 victory Sunday over Hamamatsu City, Japan, and a World Series championship.

With runners on first and second, an error by Japan's shortstop on what could have been an inning-ending double play loaded the bases for California. After a force play at the plate, the 12-year-old Pratto smacked a solid liner to center off reliever Kazuto Takakura that brought pinch-runner Eric Anderson home with the winning run.

Pratto tossed his helmet into the air after rounding first before his teammates mobbed him in the infield.

"USA! USA," yelled fans before Pratto's single. A U.S. team has now won six out of the last seven World Series, with Japan's win last year the exception.

The teams exchanged handshakes at the plate before California's giddy players posed at the mound with their new championship banner.

It was a fitting end to a tense game marked by excellent pitching and timely defense.

Braydon Salzman pitched a complete-game three-hitter for the win, striking out nine. Japan starter Shoto Totsuka struck out five over 4 1-3 innings. Totsuka gave up a homer to right to California slugger Hagen Danner.

Neither team could convert on several chances to break open the pitcher's duel earlier in the game.

With runners on first and second in the top of the sixth, third baseman Dylan Palmer blocked the bag from sliding Japan runner Ken Igeta on a bunt play to help get California get out the inning.

California put runners on first and second with two outs in the fifth, but Takakura got a flyout to end the inning.

Playing right field in the second, Takukara also made a running catch on fly down the line to save an extra-base hit with a runner on second.

In a gracious postgame gesture, Japan's players and coaches lined up and exchanged high-fives with the California kids after Huntington Beach did the traditional victory lap around the stadium warning track.

It was Japan running all over the place in the top of the second, flashing trademark hustle to scratch out the game's first run after Seiya Fujita's solid single to left. Pinch-runner Kaito Suzuki moved to second on a bunt and raced toward third with no one covering. The throw bounced into foul territory, allowing Suzuki to score easily.

Stopping dengue fever with bacteria and math

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2011) ? It may be possible to eliminate the deadly dengue fever by infecting mosquitoes with a bacterium called Wolbachia that prevents the mosquitoes from transmitting the dengue virus to humans. A new mathematical model, developed by Nick Barton (Institute of Science and Technology, Austria) and Michael Turelli (University of California, Davis), may be helpful in getting the bacteria established in mosquito populations.

"Mathematical analyses are central to successfully deploying this novel method of disease control," said Turelli, who is a co-primary investigator on the Eliminate Dengue Program. "Our analysis describes the conditions that allow researchers to initiate spreading waves, approximate the expected wave speed, and describe conditions -- specifically, variation in population density -- that will halt their spread."

The model predicts that releases of dengue-blocking bacteria over roughly one square kilometer should suffice to initiate a traveling wave of mosquito infection in urban areas. The first successful field release of Wolbachia in Australia are reported in the current issue of Nature.

The research appears in the September 2011 issue of the The American Naturalist, published by The University of Chicago Press for The American Society of Naturalists.

Pakistan's Islamic Take On "Millionaire" Game Show Is Nightly Sign Of The Times (Time.com)

This post is in partnership with Worldcrunch, a new global-news site that translates stories of note in foreign languages into English. The article below was originally published in Le Figaro.

Every evening at 7:30 p.m., Geo TV, the most watched TV channel in Pakistan, broadcasts an Islamic version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire." The show is called "Alif Laam Meem," three letters from the Arabic alphabet that can be found at the beginning of some suras (chapters) in the Koran.

"Salam Alaykoum (good evening)," says the presenter, Junaid Jamshed. A 36-year-old former singer, Jamshed used to be clean shaven. Now he wears a prayer hat and sports a long dark beard, evidence of his recent rediscovery of Islam. In the audience, women wear veils or niqabs. (See photos of Pakistan beneath the surface.)

Jamshed welcomes his first player. "Welcome Adnan, my brother." Adnan is a smiling but nervous 30-year-old man who used to be a Procter & Gamble executive before committing himself to studying the Koran. If he manages to answer the 15 questions, he will win an apartment, a pilgrimage to Mecca for two, and 2.8 million rupees, about 23,000 euros.

The presenter moves on to the first question. "How many pieces of fabric is the clothing worn by a pilgrim to Mecca made of?"

"Two," says Adnan without any hesitation.

"Is it your final answer?"

"Yes."

"Allah akbar. God congratulates you brother," says Jamshed.

Adnan fails to answer the fifth question and leaves with 20,000 rupee (160 euros). The fact that the game is difficult does not discourage the candidates. Geo TV received between 30,000 and 40,000 applications the first weeks it was broadcast, and estimates that 30 to 40 million people have been following the show: one out of every five Pakistanis. Alif Laam Meem is especially popular among women and young people between 18 and 25. (See video of the opening of Slumdog Millionaire in India.)

Muslim and proud

The success of the show suggests just how fascinated Pakistanis are with religion these days. "The Pakistanis practice their religion more and more, and want to show it in public," says Imran Aslam, the head of Geo TV.

Rifaat Hussain, a 59-year-old professor at Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad, shares this opinion. "In the 1960s and 1970s, I would travel throughout the country with girls," he recalls. "We could drink alcohol in public, eat during the day when it was the month of Ramadan. Now it's not well accepted." These days, women in niqabs are more numerous both on the university's campus and in the streets of Islamabad.

Pakistan is going through an identity crisis. The Islamic Republic of Pakistan was founded in 1947 to give the Muslims of the sub-continent a country of their own. The founding fathers thought it was impossible to integrate into India, a mostly Hindu country, but they never said explicitly that Islam should be part of the national identity.

The issue of religion became particularly tricky after 2001, when major divisions began to appear in Pakistan. In the Northeast of the country, the Taliban fight against the army in the name of Islam. They reproach the government for allying with the United States. "Religion is ubiquitous in the media. We hear about jihad, fundamentalism. So that's what people want to know about, especially the youth," says Mr. Aslam. (See photos of Christians under siege in the Muslim world.)

Two-thirds of Pakistanis are under the age of 30. It's a statistic Aslam is very much aware of, and as a television executive, very much interested in capitalizing on. He is already planning to run another season of Alif Laam Meem after the summer break.

Random questions from someone who wants a bird? | Easy Question!

If this answers your question, please click the Google +1 Facebook or Tweet buttons to share. thank you!

I really want a pet bird, but my mom despises pets, so I figured I?d just wait the year and a half until I?m off to college to get one (provided I can find a pet-compatible place to stay and all that). Anyway, here?s my question (really I have two).

Reading around here, I see a lot of people talking about how their birds watch TV with them and talk with them and stuff. Is that really right? They just sit there and watch TV with you, or watch you while your on the computer? Maybe it seems a small weird to someone who doesn?t have pets, I dunno.

Also, I took my small cousin to the pet store and saw this bird that was pretty much all red (more of a scarlet), but had a few purple spots. No, it wasn?t a parrot, but it looked really cool and I wanted to know what kind it was. It was a medium-sized bird, larger than cokatoos but smaller than those huge parrots. Anyway know what that was?

Also, last random question: can you pet birds? The ones at the pet store just bit me.
No, its not the femal eclectus. It was completely scarlet. I?m pretty sure it had tiny small purple patches, just on the end of a feather or two, but i could be incorrect. I remember it was completely scarlet.

Home & Family ? Blog Archive ? Gardening and Stress 101

Stress is more prevalent in today?s lifestyles. People take care of stress in many different ways. You will have probably never have heard of this way of dealing with stress before. What am I talking about? The cure is a zen garden No matter the situation this way works.

The idea is an minimalist space for kicking back. It is a common misunderstanding that monks mediate in these gardens. They essentially meditate in front of a wall. Zen gardens include things like gravel or sand that seems like water, rocks and plants, It is irrelevant that it isn?t Buddhist an minimalist space means peace. It is an oasis of calm in an otherwise nuts world. I will now tell you how to develop one.

1) Area selection ? It shouldn?t be too shaded. IT also doesn?t really have to be a big area, more often than not small zen gardens work well. Better in fact.

2) Build the sand or gravel baths. These are usually manufactured from rock or wood. Wood is commonly a wise decision,. Light colored wood works well also.

3) Place down a flooring sheet. To stay away from weeds and such a good plastic soil sheet must be laid. The last thing you would like is weeds and things growing up throughout the sand or gravel.

4) Fill the gravel and sand baths. Ensure that that it is even.

5) Find some rocks for visual delight. It is irrelevant what they appear like just as long as you like them. You could also pop in some statues. Don?t put in a lot though.

6) Rake the sand or gravel. Appears very simple but that is the whole point. You make the sand look like the ripples of water.

7) Get a water fountain or water feature. Not a large elaborately designed one. Just a basic one so you can hear water as you sit back.
8) Depending on how much place you have you need some furniture. A bench set can be fine. Just be sure that it is quite comfortable. This is all about minimalist ideals though so keep it basic

9) Place some flowers. Aromatic flowers like lavender are preferable.

10) Appreciate

It may sound simple but this may well take time. It will definitely be worthwhile ultimately. Once it is ready zen gardens are really low maintenance. That is the whole point of them really. A shorter period weeding much more time unwinding.

Tips to Remember for Motocross Racing ? Prudent Articles

Motocross is an exceedingly well liked sport that may trace its origins back to the 1900?s. But it is also an extreme sport that requires a great deal of preparation before participation. From keeping fit to choosing the proper motocross helmets, this guide will act like a map for newbies and as a check list for experienced riders.

Physical fitness

Motocross racing is a hard sport that requires plenty of strength and endurance in addition to skill. The sort of focus needed throughout the race can?t be acquired without practice. You need to be sure you eat healthy and physically train yourself to maintain control over the bike and your body throughout a difficult race. Plan out an expedient and challenging routine to fortify your body and develop your endurance levels as well as focus. Be certain to be psychologically and physically fit both, before, during and after the race.

Safety gear

An important side of a fun sport like motocross is safety. Without the required safety equipment like motocross helmets, elbow and knee pads, and neck braces, you could be jeopardizing your safety. Invest in high quality gear to ensure safety during races.

Choose the right bike

One thing is absolutely certain, if you?re not at ease on your bike, you cannot do much. Make sure to practice enough on your motorbike as it is going to be your companion and friend in the race and help you win. Start off by riding it in straight trails and introducing sharp turns. Practice many times before you enter the race. This will also instil self confidence in you and enhance your performance.

Other tips you need to keep under consideration

When you decide to take part in a motocross race, make sure you finish all of the required booking at least a week or 10 days in advance. Before leaving for the race make sure you have all the required kit like helmets, protection and pads, the right boots and clothing. Check for damage well in advance and don?t enter a race if your equipment is not 100% functional. You might also want to step up your riding practice or mental fitness in the week leading in to d-day. At the same time, it?s important that you don?t over-exert and put too much load on your body.

Whether you are a pro motocross rider or a newbie, you can?t afford to neglect certain facets of the sport. Make sure you pay attention to safety and preparing well ahead, you can make the best of the race.

Beyond Suffrage: How Far Have Women Come Since? | RH Reality Check

Women are demonstrating at the White House demanding voting rights in 1918. (AP Photo/Files)

Cross-posted with permission from the LA Times.

Today we celebrate the anniversary of female suffrage, a victory that took more than 70 years of political struggle to achieve. After women won the right to vote in 1920, socialist feminist Crystal Eastman observed that suffrage was an important first step but that what women really wanted was freedom. In an essay titled "Now We Can Begin," she laid out a plan toward this goal that is still relevant today.

Eastman outlined a four-point program: economic independence for women (including freedom to choose an occupation and equal pay), gender equality at home (raising "feminist sons" to share the responsibilities of family life), "voluntary motherhood" (reproductive freedom) and "motherhood endowment," or financial support for child-rearing and homemaking.

Since the 1920s, women have won many rights and opportunities in areas as diverse as higher education, professional sports and, in six states, same-sex marriage. But on the core priorities that Eastman identified, how far have we come?

Eastman optimistically called equality in the workplace "the easiest part of our program," noting that "the ground is already broken" on women's participation in various professions, trades and unions. One of the chief barriers was "inequality in pay," a problem that has proved remarkably enduring.

Women on average still make only 77 cents for every dollar paid to their male counterparts, according to the National Women's Law Center. This pay disparity is worst for women of color, who earn only 61 cents if they are African American and 52 cents if they are Latina. This pattern has been remarkably constant.

Women's lower earnings are related to gender segmentation in the workplace that relegates women to the lower rungs of the economic ladder. At?Wal-Mart, for example ? the nation's biggest employer ? women make up about 70% of hourly workers but only about 30% of managers. The Supreme Court recently ruled that the retailer's female employees could not join together in a class-action lawsuit, making it nearly impossible for them to challenge patterns of discrimination.

Although women now outnumber men on college campuses, the upper echelons of most professions and political bodies remain male-dominated. Just look at Congress: Only 17% of its members are women. Between 1923 and 2011, only 28 women have chaired congressional committees, and only 45 women of color have ever served in Congress ? just one in the Senate. The new congressional "super-committee" of 12 legislators charged with reducing the federal deficit has one white woman and not a single woman of color.

On the home front, gender norms have changed significantly since 1920, but women still do the lion's share of child care, elder care and household planning. And child-rearing is still regarded as a private matter rather than a contribution to society. Although a recent Time magazine cover story suggested an end to "chore wars," its own data showed that married women with children still do more work at home than their husbands, and full-time employed moms with children under age 6 spend more hours on household chores than any other group.

Given women's disproportionate responsibility for child-rearing amid lesser economic opportunities, the ability to plan whether and when to have children is critically important. As Eastman said: "Freedom of any kind is hardly worth considering unless it is assumed that [women] will know how to control the size of their families."

This was a tall order in 1920, when it was a crime simply to disseminate information about contraception. Fertility control is now legal, but women's reproductive freedom is under intense attack. The 2011 legislative session saw a record number of anti-choice bills introduced ? and passed into law. In just six months, state legislatures passed 80 laws to restrict access to?abortion.

State legislatures also have made deep cuts to family planning budgets, which has the perverse result of increasing unintended pregnancies. The Hyde Amendment bans federal Medicaid coverage of abortion, and only 15 states pay for abortion care with their own revenue. This means that low-income women in most of the country can have an abortion only if they can afford to pay for it out of pocket, making the right to abortion an empty promise for millions of women.

When it comes to support for child-rearing, the United States is the only major industrialized nation without a national policy guaranteeing paid parental leave. While a few states and cities have taken the initiative to implement their own policies, the vast majority of mothers (and fathers) have no right to paid time off to care for a newborn baby. Many workers do not even have a right to take unpaid leave, because the federal Family and Medical Leave Act applies only to relatively long-term workers in workplaces with 50 or more employees, leaving out small businesses, new employees and workers who have put in fewer than 1,250 hours at that job.

With no paid leave, and discrimination against?pregnant?women on the rise, women are a long way from Eastman's vision of having child-rearing "recognized by the world as work, requiring a definite economic reward and not merely entitling the performer to be dependent on some man."

In all four areas that Eastman discussed, female suffrage has not ushered in the wide-ranging changes that its opponents feared and its advocates championed.

Eastman understood that work and home are inextricably bound, that women's freedom depends on resolving what we now call "work/family" conflict. As long as women face a "motherhood penalty" while men benefit from a "fatherhood bonus," gender equality will remain out of reach. Racial discrimination has made the path to equality that much harder for women of color.

The real question now is, in Eastman's words, "how to arrange the world" so that women have "a chance to exercise their infinitely varied gifts in infinitely varied ways, instead of being destined by the accident of their sex" to lesser economic opportunities and heavier domestic burdens.

To do this, our institutions must become more responsive. The workplace has to change to allow people with families to hold good jobs, and policies must change to allow women to plan their families and to ensure that no one is left behind. In the 90 years since winning the right to vote, women have achieved gains by organizing in the streets and the workplace, by lobbying legislatures and bringing lawsuits. Arranging a more just world will require a new wave of political action at all levels, from local to national, home to workplace.

On Aug. 26, 2020, we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage. Let's make this the decade we create the conditions that bring true equality.

Eve Weinbaum is director of the Labor Center and an associate professor of sociology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Rachel Roth is director of communications and foundation support at the National Network of Abortion Funds and the author of a book on women's rights.

State Film Incentive Brings Gaming Ghost Hunters To Michigan ? CBS ...

FARMINGTON?HILLS (WWJ)?- The state has granted tax incentives to a video game producer that will put Detroit in a ghost hunting game on video screens across the country.? WWJ?s Sandra McNeill spoke with the game maker.

The X-Box and Play Station?3 games will put players in the seat of a ghost investigator at a fictional Detroit hotel called the Garrick Arms. CEO Nathaniel McClure of the game maker Scientifically Proven says the hotel will be located somewhere in the downtown, they haven?t decided yet,

?We?ve even developed a system that utilizes the consoles microphones that you can run EDP sessions since you can record ?ghost voices?, in your homes you can run investigation while you are playing the game as well, should be a ton of fun,? says

McClure moved to Farmington Hills from L.A. to start his company two years ago.

?We?ve hired from Michigan State, we?ve hired from Wayne, we?ve hired from CCS, U of M, the bulk of our employees are all born and bred Michiganders, and I brought in five guys from Los Angeles who are now new Michiganders,? said McClure.

The incentives amount to just over $400,000 dollars.

91% Tabloid

All Critics (86) | Top Critics (30) | Fresh (78) | Rotten (8)

Errol Morris is a genius, a gifted documentarian who has made better movies than "Tabloid," but none so entertaining.

Though the events Tabloid recounts took place in the pre-digital age, the film also functions as a kind of prehistory of modern celebrity culture and tabloid journalism.

Morris's subject is sexual fantasy and a particular kind of American stupidity-the ability to substitute self-justification for self-knowledge. His tone is merry.

It is quite simply one of the craziest stories ever told, made all the crazier by the fact that it's true. Or at least some version of it is true.

Tabloid, Errol Morris' latest wild and woolly portrait of human self-delusion, is a scandal-sheet dream come to life.

A tale of obsession and abduction, self-delusion and sexual confusion, Errol Morris' Tabloid stands as an almost giddy affirmation of the old cliche: Truth is stranger than fiction.

Tabloid is a nice commentary on [Errol Morris'] particular style of 'truth-telling' and objectivity. In the end, we're all lying simply by telling our version of the truth.

Morris has found a real character in McKinney, but to what end, I couldn't say.

"Tabloid" is tantalizing, but like yesterday's headlines, it's a fleeting flirtation.

It's a titillating yarn told with verve, but it doesn't shed much light on how tabloids create and encourage such stories, nor does it, finally, tell us much about human nature -- other than, perhaps, to illustrate an extreme case of it.

The celebrated filmmaker has created a meta-tabloid of sorts, surrendering to the idea that the truth is absurdly unknowable.

Morris compellingly unfolds the story and clearly means for us to see our own untoward qualities writ large in Joyce and the circus surrounding her.

Fascinating, whimsically humorous and poignant, all at once.

In addition to his admirable qualities, Morris also seems to find his subject to be hilarious. And she is.

a magnificently unsettling and funny-sad portrait of the arguably sick relationships that are forged between celebrities, the media, and their audiences

The film around [Joyce] McKinney isn't quite sure of what it's about, at times... but McKinney herself is the sort of arresting figure that you don't shake easily.

Errol Morris succeeds against all odds in besting his previous Olympians of quirkiness.

William Carlos Williams wrote "The pure products of America/ Go crazy," and the funny, freaky Tabloid captures that contrast, that promise, that curse.

The movie is guilty of condescending toward its subjects, though most of them appear to be having a fabulous time telling tales.

Jay-Z, Kanye West Accused Of Copyright Infringement

R&B artist Syl Johnson alleges Watch the Throne track samples his 'Different Strokes' without permission
By Alvin Blanco

Def Jam's lawyers are about to get busier. According to a post on "archival record label" and publisher the Numero Uno Group's blog, acclaimed R&B/soul singer Syl Johnson is considering a lawsuit against the Throne (Jay-Z and Kanye West) for an uncleared sample of one of his songs on their album Watch the Throne. A sample of Johnson's 1967 song "Different Strokes," which appears on the track "The Joy," was allegedly never properly cleared.

"Two decades and several lawsuits later, Syl Johnson is a veteran of copyright infringement cases, and has done very well for himself clearing samples from his fertile catalog (we're glad to say we've helped him with a few) for use in numerous tracks," reads part of the post. "He's been amply paid, as he is quick to boast in his concerts, by acts like Wu-Tang Clan, Kid Rock, and Michael Jackson. Other performers ... have not been so respectful."

The post, titled "Syl Johnson vs Kanye West/Jay-Z," goes on to say that the Numero Uno Group reached out to Def Jam's business department about clearing "The Joy" after Syl Johnson had gotten wind of the song. Last year, the Pete Rock-produced tune (Kanye West is credited as producer along with Mike Dean and Mike Bhaskar) was part of the G.O.O.D. Fridays series of leaks. Although originally intended to be included on West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, the sample was unable to be cleared in time to make the album (though an agreement was apparently reached for its use). Negotiations stalled due to the fact that the song was not actually being sold. However, "The Joy" recently reappeared as a bonus cut on the deluxe edition of Watch the Throne.

The Numero Uno Group points out that in the credits for Watch the Throne, they are erroneously identified as the publishers of Syl Johnson's "Different Strokes." "Wondering why we weren't consulted on this new use, and baffled why we appear in the credits, for which we never asked, we contacted the sample clearance house," continued the post. "Even they cannot get a response from their own clients. Island Def Jam seems to think that Syl doesn't have any fight left in him. We're betting otherwise."

Since the song appears on an album that is being sold — Watch the Throne has already gone gold, selling more than 600,000 units to date — Johnson is expected to be properly compensated for the use of his song, whether via a lawsuit or some sort of settlement. Messages to Def Jam representatives for comment were not returned as this story went to press.

Dallas Texas Vacation Homes | Texas real estate

When Texas is considered, the city of Dallas often surfaces in the minds eye. Apart from having a successful soap opera named after it, Dallas has continued to be a preferred holiday destination for years. Apart from Dallas residents, foreigners and citizens of other states may choose to visit Dallas on a holiday or for a business meet. This could be an annual trip or impromptu. Instead of making reservations at resorts and hotels, visitors may reside in Dallas vacation homes. Dallas vacation homes are cataloged as residential real estate, but that is where the labeling ends. In most cases, they do not serve as a primary residing quarter and are similar to investment properties when their income generating potential is considered.

Most owners use their, Dallas vacation homes for small part of the year during holidays and family gatherings. At times, this is not even an annual event and vacation homes could remain unoccupied for long stretches. This does not reduce the need of maintenance, upkeep, and annual property tax payments. Renting vacation homes during vacant periods proves to be profitable for homeowners. This helps realize cash that is sent on housekeeping apart from proving to be a dependable source of additional income.

Vacation homeowners who do not live in Dallas can hire reputed real estate agents to overlook renting activities on their behalf. These real estate brokers work in correspondence with tour operators who can assist in securing profitable overseas tourist reservations on a regular basis. Tourist groups and large families tend to prefer Dallas vacation home rentals as they provide privacy apart from being capable of housing an entire group. At times vacation homeowners may hire house cleaners, porters, and chauffeurs to cater to guest needs. As such, these homes are similar to service apartments, and rentals are equivalent to star-rated vacation properties.

Chavez's supporters shave heads in solidarity (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Supporters of President Hugo Chavez shaved their heads in solidarity with their leader's struggle against cancer on Sunday as hundreds prayed and sang at a televised event.

Barbers shaved off the hair of several men and at least one woman while the crowd swayed to a religious song. Chavez, who shaved his head after starting to lose his hair due to chemotherapy, smiled and waved to the crowd.

"We're Christians. Christ unites us," Chavez said in a speech, noting that others had decided to join him and "change their look."

Chavez said he may undergo a third round of chemotherapy but expressed optimism that the worst of his illness has passed.

"I no longer feel sick but rather that I'm convalescing from the illness I had," Chavez said.

Those attending included a group of six from the Dominican Republic who shaved their heads in a show of support outside the Venezuelan Embassy in their country on Friday. Chavez greeted the Dominicans with hugs and stood arm-in-arm with them.

He also grew emotional as he recalled meeting a young cancer victim who gave him a Venezuelan flag some time ago. He said the girl's name was Genesis, and she had an advanced brain tumor. He said she had approached him at an event and given him the flag.

"She told me, 'Chavez, I'm going. I know I'm going ... In this flag, Chavez, I'll stay with you,'" Chavez said, his voice cracking and his eyes tearing up for a moment.

Chavez embraced the flag and vowed to survive. "It's time to live," he said.

Chavez returned from his latest round of chemotherapy in Cuba on Aug. 14.

He underwent surgery in Cuba in June that removed a cancerous tumor from his pelvic region. He has not specified where the tumor was located. He has said the chemotherapy has been going well and aims to ensure no malignant cells reappear.

Chavez bowed his head during a prayer and later clapped along with the music. Young men with close-cropped hair stood in the crowd as shouts of "Hallelujah!" and "Amen!" rose at the end of a song.

The Venezuelan president defended his practice of providing the public with updates on his medical condition rather than having one of his doctors release reports.

He said his political opponents "are crazy to find out who my doctors are."

"I'm not going to expose my doctors to the ridicule," Chavez said, adding that his opponents "would be capable of anything."
